Chapter 9 - The Sweet Taste Of Poetic Justice

""And now,"" the chief judge announced, his voice booming through the auditorium's sound system, ""the Grand Prize for Innovation and Technical Excellence in the Middle School Division goes to... Olivia Vance-Miller for the Autonomous Search and Rescue Rover!""

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause.

Olivia’s hand flew to her mouth in shock. She looked over at Adam and me, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy. Adam let out a deafening cheer, clapping his hands above his head, while tears of fierce, unyielding pride welled in my eyes.

Olivia walked up the stage steps, her head held high, and accepted the towering golden trophy and a certificate for a five-thousand-dollar scholarship toward summer engineering camp. The camera flashes illuminated her brilliant smile.

From the back of the auditorium, I caught a glimpse of Daniel, his wife, and Madison slipping quietly out the side exit doors. Madison’s arms were crossed, her head down, completely ignored by the crowd celebrating real accomplishment.

A week later, Evelyn Vance called me with the final legal update regarding the colonial house and the forgery fiasco.

""Well, Hannah, the city attorney officially resolved the housing authority matter,"" Evelyn reported, her tone brisk and satisfied. ""Because Monica had no prior criminal record, they offered her a deferred prosecution diversion program. She pled guilty to a misdemeanor count of filing a false instrument, received two years of supervised probation, two hundred hours of mandatory community service, and a three-thousand-dollar fine.""

""Community service?"" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

""Oh, yes,"" Evelyn chuckled. ""And knowing the county administrator, she’ll likely be assigned to trash pickup along the county highways or sorting donated clothes at the municipal thrift warehouse. No more luxury manicures and leisurely afternoons for your sister.""

""What about my parents?""

""They finally served Greg and Monica with an eviction notice of their own through a private attorney,"" Evelyn said. ""It turns out your father reached his breaking point when Greg tried to take out a title loan against Dad’s Buick. Monica and Greg are currently moving into a cramped, one-bedroom garden apartment on the industrial side of town. Greg is working graveyard shifts stocking shelves at a big-box store, and Monica had to take a job as a cashier at a local discount retailer to cover their basic expenses.""

I took a deep breath, looking around my peaceful, sunlit living room. There was no joy in hearing about their misery, but there was an immense, grounding satisfaction in knowing that the cosmic scales had finally balanced themselves. For decades, my sister had coasted through life on a wave of unearned privilege, cruelty, and financial exploitation. Now, the real world had finally caught up with her, and she was discovering what it felt like to survive on her own merits.

The cycle was broken. The freeloaders were gone.
