Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

When Daniel stepped into the living room, the tension was thick enough to choke on. Mark stood up straight, his defensive posture obvious. Allison looked like she was preparing to dial the police. Only Noah smiled, fascinated by the massive bouquet of flowers.

""Everyone,"" Evelyn announced with quiet authority. ""This is Daniel Vance. Daniel, this is my sister-in-law Brenda, my son Mark, his wife Sarah, and you already know of Allison.""

Daniel stepped forward, extending his hand directly to Mark. ""Nice to meet you, Mark. Evelyn tells me you run a successful mechanical business. That takes an enormous amount of discipline.""

Mark hesitated, glanced at Allison, but Daniel’s open expression and firm posture made it impossible to be overtly rude without looking like a petulant child. Mark shook his hand. ""Uh, yeah. Commercial and residential plumbing.""

Daniel turned to Brenda with a courteous bow of his head. ""Mrs. Hastings, an honor."" He then looked at Allison, meeting her hostile glare with steady, unshakable calm. ""Good evening, Allison.""

Allison didn't take his hand. She kept her arms crossed tightly over her chest. ""Mr. Vance. How brave of you to show up here.""

""Allison,"" Evelyn warned sharply.

""No, Mom, let's have it out!"" Allison burst out, the dam breaking. She looked at Daniel with open contempt. ""I know your type. You find lonely women in hobby classes, you charm them with compliments, and before they know it, you're moving into their homes and getting written into their wills! My father built this house. My father worked sixty hours a week so my mother would be secure. You are not going to come in here and take advantage of her vulnerability!""

""Allison, that is disgraceful!"" Brenda gasped, shocked despite her own reservations.

Mark grabbed his sister’s arm. ""Allie, sit down. You're out of line.""

""I am protecting our mother!"" Allison yelled.

Throughout the entire tirade, Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice, and he didn't look offended. He simply set the wine bottle on the side table, handed the lilies gently to Evelyn, and turned to face Allison directly.

""Allison,"" Daniel said, his tone as calm and measured as a seasoned diplomat. ""If I were in your position, watching someone step into my mother's life after losing a beloved father, I would probably be suspicious, too. You love your mother. That is clear, and it is honorable.""

Allison blinked, entirely unprepared for empathy instead of anger.

""However,"" Daniel continued, his voice gaining quiet strength, ""your mother is not a prize to be won, nor is she an invalid requiring a guardian. She is an intelligent, capable, beautiful woman who has spent decades serving everyone in this room. As for my intentions: I spent forty years as the senior partner of Vance & Miller Architectural Firm. I own my home outright in the West End. I have my own pension, my own savings, and two adult daughters who give me just as much grief as you give Evelyn.""

A stifled snort came from the sofa; Cousin Greg was trying desperately not to laugh.

Daniel took half a step closer to Allison. ""I am not here for your mother’s house, Allison. I am here because when she walks onto a dance floor, the entire room lights up. And because when I sit across from her at dinner, I remember what it feels like to look forward to tomorrow. If you think that is a crime, you have my deepest sympathy.""

Allison stood frozen, her mouth slightly open, the wind completely taken out of her sails. For the first time, she had nothing to say.
