Chapter 8 - The Foreclosure of Illusions

Two weeks later, the cold November wind was howling through the suburbs of Naperville, Illinois.

A large commercial moving truck was parked in front of the four-bedroom colonial home on Maplewood Drive.

Marcus had been released on a fifty-thousand-dollar bond posted by Isla's elderly uncle, while Isla was confined to home detention with an electronic ankle monitor awaiting their federal arraignment in Chicago.

Marcus sat on the bare living room floor among stacks of cardboard boxes, his unshaven face gaunt, wearing faded sweatpants and an old college sweatshirt.

The front door opened, and his corporate defense attorney, Richard Vance, walked inside carrying a leather briefcase.

Marcus jumped up from the floor, his eyes wild with desperate hope. "Richard! Did you speak to my mother? Did she agree to the civil restitution agreement?"

Richard sighed heavily, setting his briefcase on a cardboard box and pulling out a certified court order.

"Your mother refused to take the call, Marcus," Richard said in a flat, exhausted voice. "Her corporate legal team filed a formal motion to lift the bankruptcy stay this morning."

Marcus blinked, his mouth dropping open. "What does that mean?"

"It means, Marcus, that this house was pledged as collateral under the 2022 emergency mezzanine loan your mother’s holding company extended to your firm," the lawyer explained. "Since your business failed to make the quarterly interest payments, the trust has executed an immediate, non-judicial foreclosure."

From the kitchen doorway, Isla emerged holding a cup of instant coffee, her face pale, the black plastic monitor strapped to her slender ankle blinking with an ominous green light.

"Foreclosure?" Isla shrieked, her voice shaking with terror. "Where are we supposed to live? My uncle won't let us stay in his basement! The court seized my jewelry! They seized my sports car!"

"You have seventy-two hours to vacate the property, Mrs. Whitman," Richard replied without looking at her. "The court has authorized a municipal trustee to take possession on Friday at noon."

"She can't do this!" Marcus screamed, tears of rage and humiliation spilling down his hollow cheeks. "I am her flesh and blood! She worked as a maid in Peoria so I could go to private school! She can't leave me on the street with nothing!"

"Your mother gave you thirty years of unconditional support, Marcus," Richard said, packing his papers away and looking the young man dead in the eye. "She gave you an education, seed capital, and endless patience. And in return, you stole from her charity and called her a maid to impress country club strangers."

Richard snapped his briefcase shut and walked toward the front door.

"Your mother didn't leave you with nothing, Marcus," Richard added quietly from the threshold. "She left you with the exact reality you built with your own hands. Good luck at the trial."
