Chapter 8 - The Price of False Pride

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the hallway. One of the photojournalists raised a camera, and a blinding flash captured the bruised forearm against the golden embroidery of the valedictorian gown.
Dr. Sterling’s expression transformed from mild annoyance into icy fury. He looked at the bruises, then looked down at Richard as if he were a specimen of contaminated waste. "Mr. Hensley... did you do that to our chief resident?"
"It was an accident!" Richard stammered, his face turning an alarming shade of mottled purple as he backed away from the towering surgeon. "She was being hysterical outside! She was trying to ruin Haley's photo opportunity! I was just... I was just maintaining order!"
"Maintaining order?" Dean Bradley stepped forward, his eyes burning behind his spectacles. "You physically assaulted the valedictorian of this university on the front steps of the hall. Campus security cameras have already archived the entire footage from the VIP entrance. The footage shows you shoving Dr. Hensley backward down the wet stairs before walking in with a ticket registered in her name."
Haley began to weep openly, burying her face in her hands as she realized the cameras were recording her alongside her disgraced parents. "Dad, let's just go... please, let's just leave," she whimpered, pulling on Richard's sleeve.
"Wait a minute!" Richard shouted, his arrogance collapsing into desperate bargaining. "Dr. Sterling, my logistics company has a pending bid for the St. Jude's regional supply contract! Five million dollars in surgical equipment distribution! We’ve been negotiating with your procurement committee for six months!"
Dr. Sterling pulled a thin silver pen from his pocket, crossed his arms, and stared at Richard with utter revulsion. "Mr. Hensley, St. Jude’s Memorial does not do business with cowards who abuse their own children. Consider your bid formally rejected. In fact, as the chairman of the regional hospital network, I will personally ensure that every healthcare facility in this tri-state area is informed of your character."
"No... no, you can't do that!" Evelyn cried out, her voice shrill and cracked. "That contract was going to pay our mortgage! Richard took out loans to prepare for that warehouse expansion!"
"That is no longer our concern," Dean Bradley stated with absolute finality. He turned to the two security officers. "Escort these individuals off campus grounds immediately. If any of them set foot within five hundred yards of Dr. Hensley or this university again, have them arrested for criminal trespass."

"Clara! Clara, look at me!" Richard yelled as the guards seized his shoulders, turning him forcefully toward the exit. "I'm your father! You can't let them ruin me! Tell them to stop! Clara!"
Clara did not say a word. She simply turned her back on him, walking back toward the mahogany conference table to sign her residency contract, leaving her father’s frantic cries to echo down the corridor until the heavy steel doors slammed shut.
