Chapter 2 - The View from the Front Row

Inside the cavernous, vaulted auditorium of the university hall, Richard Hensley adjusted the collar of his tailored jacket, puffing out his chest like a peacock among royalty. He had never set foot inside a premier medical institution unless it was to complain about an unpaid bill, yet here he sat, anchored squarely in the center of the first row beneath the gilded chandeliers of the VIP pavilion.
Beside him, his wife Evelyn was practically purring with delight, running her manicured fingers over the crushed velvet upholstery of the reserved box seats. "Richard, look at the people around us," she whispered in an urgent, covetous tone, nodding toward a group of silver-haired gentlemen in bespoke Italian suits chatting quietly just three feet away. "That’s Dr. Sterling, the Chief of Surgery at St. Jude’s Memorial, and the man next to him is the chairman of the state medical board! If Haley plays her cards right, this single morning could land her an endorsement contract with their wellness brand!"
Haley was barely paying attention to the conversation, entirely consumed by her phone screen. She had spent the last twenty minutes angling her front-facing camera, holding the embossed gold VIP invitation right beside her heavily contoured cheek. She took selfie after selfie, applying warm filters and tagging every luxury lifestyle account she followed.
"Caption: Celebrating high society achievements with the family! Nothing but the best for us," Haley murmured to herself, tapping her polished acrylic nails against the screen as she hit post. She glanced toward the main entrance with a smirk. "Did you see Clara’s face out in the rain? She looked like a drowned rat. Honestly, Dad, what was she thinking, trying to push her way in here? She’s an orderly. Imagine if someone asked her to empty a trash can while sitting next to a hospital trustee!"
Richard chuckled, reaching into his pocket for a bottle of sparkling mineral water. "Your mother and I raised her with every opportunity, but Clara simply lacks ambition. She wants to play the martyr, working night shifts for minimum wage. Giving you that gold ticket was the only useful thing she’s done in four years. You have the look, Haley. You carry the Hensley name with style. Let Clara stay where she belongs—in the background, out of sight."
Around them, distinguished donors and department chairs were whispering excitedly, checking their printed programs with expressions of profound anticipation.

"They say this year's top scholar is unprecedented," Richard overheard Dr. Sterling murmur to a colleague. "A true generational genius. A full scholarship graduate who worked hospital floors to support herself while publishing three groundbreaking papers on neuroblastoma."
Evelyn leaned toward Richard, a smug grin spreading across her painted lips. "See? Real achievers. Not pathetic little assistants like your daughter. Let's make sure we get Haley introduced to whoever this prodigy is right after the curtain falls."
