Plot

Chapter 7 - The Arrest at Sunday Brunch

The arrest at my house was only the first phase of the reckoning. Because the crime involved criminal trespass, felony destruction of property, and an ongoing investigation into interstate wire fraud and forged estate documents, the state police held Richard in custody overnight without bail.

By Sunday morning, news of the incident had not yet reached my mother or Bryce. Richard had refused his one phone call in a stubborn, arrogant belief that his attorney would quietly secure his release before anyone in his social circle noticed.

He was disastrously wrong.

Every Sunday at eleven, Diane, Bryce, and their circle of wealthy, status-obsessed socialites gathered at the Brookhaven Country Club for their weekly champagne brunch. To my mother, that dining room was the center of the universe—the place where she bragged about Bryce’s imaginary corporate achievements and flaunted the lifestyle she could not afford.

At 11:30 a.m., Grandpa Walter and I walked through the grand double doors of the country club, flanked by Detective Vance and two uniformed state troopers carrying a sealed brown folder.

The dining room fell into a hush as our small procession moved past the white tablecloths, crystal chandeliers, and clinking mimosa glasses. At the center table, Diane sat laughing with Aunt Cheryl, while Bryce leaned back in his chair, wearing a designer suit bought with the money I had given him for his debts.

Mom looked up, annoyed by the disturbance, but when she saw me standing beside Walter and the police, her smile froze.

""Nathan? Father?"" Diane said, setting her glass down with a slight rattle. ""What is the meaning of this spectacle? You know this is our private family time.""

""Where is Richard, Diane?"" Grandpa Walter asked, his voice ringing clearly across the silent room.

Diane stiffened, glancing nervously at her friends. ""He had early business meetings in the city. Now please leave before you make a scene.""

""He isn't in the city, Diane,"" Detective Vance announced, stepping forward and displaying his gold badge for the entire dining room to see. ""Your husband was arrested at 1:20 this morning on felony charges of burglary, stalking, and aggravated property destruction.""

A collective gasp swept through the room. Aunt Cheryl’s jaw dropped. Bryce sat bolt upright, knocking his water glass over, the liquid spreading across the white cloth.

""That's a lie!"" Diane shrieked, rising from her chair, her face flushed scarlet. ""Richard is a respected businessman! Nathan, what did you do?!""

""I didn't do anything, Mom,"" I said calmly, looking her straight in the eye without a shred of the guilt she had spent thirty years cultivating in me. ""Dad broke into my house with a crowbar, lighter fluid, and spray paint. He’s the one who smashed my window on Thanksgiving week. And we have 4K video footage of him doing it.""

Bryce stood up, his face pale and furious. ""You set him up! You're trying to ruin this family because you're jealous!""

Detective Vance didn't even look at Bryce; he simply signaled the two uniformed troopers. ""Mrs. Ellison, we have a warrant signed by the county magistrate to seize all financial records, computers, and trust documents from your residence. Furthermore, Bryce Ellison, you are being served with a grand jury subpoena regarding sixty thousand dollars in unpaid illicit debts and tax evasion tied to your father's business accounts.""

One of the troopers stepped forward and slapped the heavy legal summons directly against Bryce’s chest. Bryce stumbled back against his chair, his hands shaking so violently he dropped the papers onto the floor.

""No... no, this is a mistake,"" Diane whimpered, looking desperately around the room at her friends, women who were already whispering behind their cloth napkins, turning their backs on her in real-time. ""Nathan, please. We're your family. Think of how this looks!""

May you like

""That's the problem, Diane,"" Grandpa Walter said coldly, turning to walk away. ""You only ever cared about how things looked. Now the whole town can see exactly who you are.""
