Chapter 5 - Setting the Trap

Sitting in that quiet kitchen, the boy inside me who had desperately sought Richard Ellison’s approval died. In his place stood a man who was done being the family’s sacrificial lamb.

""I'm not going to run, Grandpa,"" I said, my voice steadying. ""And I'm not going to let him bully me out of the home I built with my bare hands.""

""I wouldn't expect any less of you, Nathan,"" Walter replied, a grim smile touching his weathered lips. ""Richard has always been arrogant. He assumes that because he bullied you as a child, he can terrify you as an adult. He thinks you're weak because you have a conscience. That is his fatal flaw.""

""What do we do?""

Walter tapped the heavy legal folder. ""We don't go to the local precinct with just a handwriting comparison. Your father has friends in local politics; he’ll claim it's a misunderstanding or blame Bryce. If we want this madness to end permanently, we have to catch him where he cannot lie, deflect, or squirm out of the consequences. We catch him in the act.""

Over the next four days, under Walter's guidance, I executed a meticulous plan. First, I called an old college friend who specialized in enterprise security systems. While I pretended to be away staying at an extended-stay hotel due to the damages, a specialized technician secretly retrofitted my Brookhaven property.

They installed ultra-high-definition, night-vision infrared cameras hidden inside the birdhouse near the driveway, behind the louvered attic vents, and concealed within the decorative brickwork of the porch columns. Every angle of the perimeter was covered with cloud-synced, motion-activated recording that fed directly to my phone and a private server.

Next came the bait.

On Friday afternoon, I called my mother. I made sure to let my voice sound hollow, cracked, and completely shattered.

""Mom,"" I wept softly into the receiver, sounding like a man on the edge of a nervous collapse. ""I can't take this anymore. The phone calls... the threats. Someone drove past my house again last night. I haven't slept in three days. I’m terrified.""

""Oh, Nathan..."" she murmured, her tone dripping with false maternal sympathy that made my stomach churn. ""I told you, you're all alone out there. You aren't safe.""

""I think you and Dad were right,"" I choked out, pretending to hold back a sob. ""I can't handle living here. I’m leaving town for the weekend to stay at a cabin upstate. I... I left the spare key and the original title deeds in the study safe. Maybe Bryce should just take over the house. If Dad wants to manage the property and deal with these people, I’ll sign whatever he wants when I get back on Monday. I just want peace.""

""You're making the right decision, darling,"" Diane said hurriedly, barely able to conceal the triumphant excitement in her voice. ""Your father and I will take care of everything. You just rest.""

The moment she hung up, I knew the trap was primed. Richard Ellison would not be able to resist. He was far too impatient, far too greedy, and far too arrogant to wait until Monday. He would want to get into that house, inspect his prize, and ensure that nothing stood between him and the million-dollar land buyout.

Grandpa Walter and I spent Saturday evening sitting in my darkened car parked two streets away, behind a row of towering pine trees, watching the live video feed streaming on my tablet screen.

At precisely 1:15 a.m., the motion sensor alert chimed softly.

On the high-definition infrared screen, a dark sedan with its headlights turned off crept slowly into my driveway. The driver’s side door opened, and a man wearing a heavy dark jacket and a baseball cap stepped out into the crisp moonlight.

He didn't walk like a stranger. He walked with the arrogant, heavy stride of a man who believed he owned the world.

He approached the boarded-up living room window, pulling a heavy crowbar from his coat.

""Look at the screen, Grandpa,"" I whispered, holding the tablet steady.

Walter leaned in, his face illuminated by the cold blue light. The man turned toward the front door, his face caught perfectly in the 4K night-vision camera concealed above the transom.

May you like

It was Richard Ellison.
