Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Quiet Room

The silence that followed was suffocating. Robert stood in the center of the room, looking between the pharmacy receipt and the eldest daughter he had treated like a saint for four years. The exhaustion on his face seemed to age him twenty years in twenty seconds.

“You lied,” Robert breathed. It wasn't a question; it was the sound of a man watching his entire reality shatter into jagged pieces. “You stood in my kitchen, looked me in the eye, and told me Emily was taking drugs.”

Karen’s composed, pristine mask cracked completely. Big, ugly tears began streaming down her cheeks, but this time they weren’t calculated. They were born of sheer, cornered desperation.

“Dad, you don't understand!” she cried out, her voice rising in pitch. “Marcus texted me this afternoon and said the police were raiding his apartment! He told me they were tracing his sales! I had twenty of his pills in my glove compartment, Dad! If you found them, or if the police searched my car, my college scholarships would be gone! My whole life would be ruined!”

“So you planted them on your fifteen-year-old sister?” Robert roared, his voice booming off the linoleum walls with such fury that Karen flinched violently. “You put them in her bag?!”

“I panicked!” Karen sobbed, covering her face. “I just needed them out of my car! I thought... I thought if you found them, you’d just get mad at Emily, ground her for a few weeks, and flush them down the toilet! I didn’t know you were going to kick her out into the storm! That was your decision, Dad! You locked the door, not me!”

“Because I believed you!” Robert screamed, tears of pure agony finally spilling over his own eyes. “I trusted you! I thought you were protecting this family! And you almost killed your sister to protect your own skin!”

Deputy Daniels stepped between them before Robert could move any closer. “That’s enough, Mr. Walls. Step back.”

The deputy opened the door and signaled into the hallway. Two uniformed officers stepped into the room with pairs of handcuffs gleaming on their duty belts.

“Karen Walls, turn around and put your hands behind your back,” Daniels instructed calmly.

“What? No! Dad, do something!” Karen shrieked, backing into the corner, thrashing her arms. “You can’t arrest me! I’m seventeen! I have midterms on Monday! Dad, tell them!”

Robert didn’t move. He stood completely still, his arms hanging limp at his sides, watching as the officers expertly spun Karen around, pulled her wrists behind her, and clicked the steel cuffs over her delicate wrists.

“Karen Walls, you are being placed under arrest for distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance, filing a false police report, and felony reckless endangerment of a minor,” Deputy Daniels recited with chilling professionalism.

“Dad! Dad, please! Don’t let them take me!” Karen wailed as the two officers escorted her out into the busy hospital corridor, patients and nurses turning their heads to watch the crying girl in the expensive coat be led away.

Robert stood alone in the center of the small room, staring at the floor where his daughter had just been standing. Then, his knees buckled, and the grown man sank down onto the cold plastic chair, burying his face in his hands as loud, ragged sobs tore through his chest.

Daniels watched him for a long moment before speaking. “Crying isn’t going to fix this, Mr. Walls. Your other daughter is down the hall. And you have a lot more than an apology to deliver.”
