Chapter 9 - The Rebuilt Foundation

Six months later, the spring sun brought the gardens of the Weller estate back to life in a breathtaking explosion of color.

The heavy, dark drapes inside the mansion had been replaced with airy linen curtains that fluttered in the warm May breeze.

Hannah had transformed the cavernous east wing of the house into the Edmund Weller Foundation for Disabled Veterans.

The rooms that had once echoed with her aunt's shallow gossip now provided physical therapy, legal aid, and housing support for returning soldiers.

Hannah had enrolled in the senior clinical program at Northwestern University, finally finishing the nursing degree she had postponed to care for her grandfather.

She wore a simple floral dress, her dark hair falling softly around her glowing face as she reviewed the foundation's monthly grants on the terrace.

Beside her, Mr. Pell was happily directing two young apprentice gardeners as they planted fifty new heirloom rose bushes along the stone balustrade.

A low, familiar rumble echoed up the driveway as Rocco’s black town car glided through the open iron gates.

Hannah’s heart gave a warm, familiar flutter in her chest as she stood up from the patio table to greet him.

Over the past six months, Rocco had visited every Sunday, never demanding, never imposing his dangerous underworld persona on her peace.

He had helped her vet the foundation's board of directors, ensured that crooked contractors stayed far away from the renovations, and listened with genuine fascination as she talked about her medical rotations.

Rocco stepped out of the vehicle, carrying a wooden crate filled with vintage medical textbooks he had tracked down from an estate in Boston.

He looked at Hannah standing on the terrace, and the hard, guarded expression he wore for the rest of Chicago completely melted into warmth.

"You look tired, nurse," Rocco teased gently, setting the crate onto the stone bench as he climbed the steps.

"Pediatric cardiology rotation will do that to a person," Hannah laughed, stepping forward into his welcoming arms.

Rocco wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad chest, holding her with deep, unhurried tenderness.

He kissed the crown of her head, breathing in the scent of lilacs and clean sunshine that seemed to follow her everywhere.

"I have an update for you," Rocco murmured against her hair.

Hannah looked up, resting her hands against the soft wool of his collar. "About Marlene?"

"Her final bankruptcy petition was approved this morning," Rocco reported, his tone calm and matter-of-fact.

"The bank foreclosed on her townhouse to settle the debts she owed Edmund's estate. Bram is currently working as a junior freight handler at the railyards."

Hannah took a slow breath, feeling no satisfaction or joy in their downfall, only the profound, final closure of a chapter that could never hurt her again.

"They chose their path, Rocco," Hannah said softly. "I just hope they finally learn what hard work looks like."

"You have a bigger heart than they ever deserved, little one," Rocco smiled, his thumb gently caressing her cheek.
