Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Estate

Night fell heavily over the sprawling estate, cloaking the ancient oak trees in pitch-black shadows. The rain transformed into a fierce autumn storm, howling against the eaves and rattling the windowpanes.

Gabriel had insisted that Hannah move from her drafty room above the garage into the master suite on the second floor. More importantly, he refused to leave the property. His personal security detail had quietly secured the perimeter, placing discreet sentries at every gate, pathway, and entrance to the manor.

Around two in the morning, Hannah sat up in bed, wide awake. The grand bedroom felt too large, the silence too eerie. She wrapped herself in a warm wool shawl and walked down the darkened corridor, guided by the faint glow of the fireplace downstairs.

She found Gabriel standing in the grand foyer, dressed in a black turtleneck and slacks, looking out through the side window toward the tree-lined driveway. He held a crystal glass of amber bourbon in his hand, looking alert and perfectly relaxed, as if waiting for an old friend.

""You should be sleeping,"" Gabriel said without turning around, having heard her soft footsteps on the carpet.

""I tried,"" Hannah replied, stepping down the last two stairs. ""Every time I close my eyes, I keep thinking about Bram and what he might do. He’s always been reckless, but I never thought he would deal with criminals.""

Gabriel turned to face her, taking a slow sip from his glass. ""Desperate men do desperate things when their delusions of entitlement are shattered. Bram lived his entire life believing the world owed him luxury. Stripping that away makes him dangerous—not because he is brave, but because he is completely foolish.""

""And Victor Rossi?"" Hannah asked, leaning against the banister. ""Is he foolish too?""

""Rossi is greedy,"" Gabriel said bluntly. ""He thinks he can use Bram's legal claim to create chaos, tie the shipping docks up in litigation, and muscle his way onto the waterfront while the family is fractured. What Rossi doesn't know is that Edmund didn't just leave you the docks. He transferred the maritime security contracts directly to my firm.""

Before Hannah could ask what that entailed, the radio clipped to Gabriel’s associate’s belt gave a double click.

A low voice crackled through the speaker: ""Boss. Movement at the west service gate. Three unmarked black SUVs. They cut the padlock on the utility road.""

Gabriel set his glass down on the console table with deliberate calmness. ""Are they armed?""

""Visible sidearms. It’s Rossi’s crew. Bram Sterling is in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle.""

Hannah's breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. ""They're here?""

Gabriel looked at Hannah, his expression entirely composed. There was no fear in his eyes—only the cold, calculated focus of a predator preparing for a trap to snap shut.

""Hannah, go back upstairs to the master bedroom with Marco,"" Gabriel instructed gently. ""Lock the door. Do not come down until I call for you.""

""Gabriel, please be careful,"" she pleaded, reaching out instinctively and catching his sleeve. ""There's too many of them. Don't risk your life for this house.""

Gabriel looked down at her small hand gripping his arm. A subtle, dangerous tenderness flickered across his face. He gently placed his hand over hers, squeezing it lightly.

""Hannah, they didn't come for the house,"" Gabriel whispered. ""They came because they think you are an easy target. And in my world, when someone threatens what I have sworn to protect, they do not leave the field unbroken. Go upstairs.""

Reluctantly, Hannah allowed the bodyguard, Marco, to escort her up the grand staircase. From the upstairs landing, she turned back and saw Gabriel buttoning his dark overcoat. He signaled to his team, and four armed men melted out of the shadows, falling seamlessly into formation behind him.

The heavy front doors of the estate swung open, letting in a gust of cold, wet wind. Gabriel stepped out into the stormy night to face the intruders on his own terms.
