Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

By six in the evening, the grand manor was entirely empty. Marlene and Bram had thrown their designer suitcases into the trunk of a rented sedan, shouting obscenities into their phones as they sped down the gravel driveway. The domestic staff, who had secretly despised Marlene’s cruel treatment of Hannah for years, quietly returned to their duties, whispering amongst themselves in awed relief.
Gabriel remained in the library with Hannah, watching the rain begin to lash against the tall paned windows. Mr. Vance had departed an hour earlier, leaving stacks of legal deeds, account keys, and signature cards neatly arranged on the long conference table.
""You look overwhelmed,"" Gabriel said, breaking the silence. He was pouring hot water from a silver teapot into two porcelain cups, handing one to her with surprising gentleness.
""I feel like I'm dreaming,"" Hannah admitted, holding the warm teacup against her chest. ""Yesterday I was searching under the sofa cushions for spare change to buy bread. Today I own the house, the land, and companies I don't even know how to run. What if I ruin everything Grandpa worked for?""
""Edmund didn't leave this to you because he expected you to become a ruthless corporate shark,"" Gabriel said, leaning against the arm of a leather sofa. ""He left it to you because you have a conscience. Business can be learned. Integrity cannot. Besides, you won't be managing it alone.""
Hannah looked at him, curious. ""What do you mean?""
""The Ferrante Group has an advisory board specializing in asset restructuring,"" Gabriel explained. ""I will assign my top legal and financial managers to guide you through every transition. You will hold the final vote on every decision, but they will handle the operational grind. No one will take advantage of you ever again.""
Hannah felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth blossom in her chest. For years, she had been the protector, the sole pillar holding up her ailing grandfather. She had never known what it felt like to have someone stand in front of her, shielding her from the storm.
""Why are you doing this, Gabriel?"" she asked softly. ""My grandfather's debt was settled long ago. You don't owe him anything.""
Gabriel looked out into the gathering darkness, his eyes reflecting the rain streaks on the glass. ""Your grandfather saved my father's life when everyone else turned their backs. In our world, honor isn't calculated in dollars and cents. It's a blood oath. And to be frank... seeing the look on your aunt's face when she realized she couldn't bully you anymore was worth every minute of my time.""
A genuine laugh escaped Hannah’s lips—the first real laugh she had shared in months. Gabriel smiled back, and for a fleeting moment, the dangerous, untouchable mafia boss vanished, replaced by an intensely captivating man with warmth in his eyes.
Suddenly, Gabriel's personal phone vibrated sharply on the table.
He picked it up, pressing it to his ear without looking away from Hannah. ""Speak.""
As he listened to the voice on the other end, his smile faded completely. The icy, lethal detachment returned to his features, his jaw tightening into rigid granite.
""Where?"" Gabriel asked curtly.
A pause.
""Do not intervene yet. Just track them. I want to know who is funding them.""
Gabriel hung up the phone and slipped it into his jacket pocket.
""What happened?"" Hannah asked, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere.
""Marlene and Bram didn't go to a hotel,"" Gabriel said calmly, though his eyes burned with dangerous intensity. ""They drove straight to the industrial docks on the south side. Bram met with Victor Rossi.""
Hannah gasped, dropping her spoon onto the saucer with a loud clatter. Even isolated in the manor, she had heard the name Victor Rossi. He was the head of a ruthless rival syndicate, a loan shark and black-market operator who had been trying to muscle into Edmund’s commercial shipping docks for over a decade.
""Bram has significant gambling debts with Rossi,"" Gabriel continued, his voice dangerously level. ""It appears your cousin offered Rossi a deal: if Rossi helps them nullify your grandfather's will and eliminate the obstacles, Bram will sign over Edmund’s commercial shipping terminals to the Rossi family.""
Hannah felt a chill run down her spine. ""Eliminate the obstacles... he means me.""

Gabriel walked over to where Hannah sat, placing a firm, reassuring hand on her shoulder. The strength in his grip was undeniable, grounding her against the rising panic.
""No one is touching you, Hannah,"" Gabriel promised, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. ""They made a fatal mistake. They thought Edmund was their only adversary. They forgot who was sitting beside you in that hallway.""
