Chapter 4 - The Bill Arrives

"Daniel, are you listening to me?!" Claire’s voice tore through the receiver, cracking with hysterical fury. "Julian just had his accounts frozen! The hotel manager is standing outside our villa with two security guards! They just ran my cards, and every single one was declined! They’re saying we owe thirty-two thousand dollars for the private villa, the seaplane transfer, and the excursions, and if we don't settle the bill by midnight, they're calling the local authorities!"

I leaned against the kitchen counter, looking out at my father’s empty garden. A lone cardinal sat on the wooden fence post, shaking rainwater from its bright red feathers.

"That sounds like an uncomfortable situation, Claire," I said calmly.

"Uncomfortable?! Are you insane?!" she screamed. I could hear tropical wind whipping into her microphone, followed by the muffled, panicked shouting of Julian Sterling in the background arguing with someone in broken English. "Daniel, transfer twenty thousand dollars from our savings right now! You can't leave me stranded in a foreign country! I am your wife!"

"My wife was supposed to be in Ohio yesterday," I replied, my voice dropping an octave, steady and merciless. "My wife was supposed to be sitting in the front pew of St. Mark’s Church, holding my hand while they lowered my father into the ground. My wife wouldn't have been in an overwater bungalow with Julian Sterling, drinking champagne bought with my father’s stolen money."

The silence on the other end was absolute. Even the background shouting seemed to vanish for a second.

"You... you know?" she whispered, all the rage instantly evaporating, replaced by pure terror.

"I know about Aura Horizon Holdings," I said clearly. "I know about the forged equity loan on our home. I know about the offshore trust in Belize. And so does the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Claire. Marcus Vance submitted the complete forensic dossier to the U.S. Attorney's office in Cleveland this morning."

"Daniel, please!" she cried, bursting into genuine, desperate tears. "Julian tricked me! He manipulated me! He told me you were holding me back, that we could take the money and start an investment fund! I never wanted to hurt you! It was all Julian’s idea! You have to help me, Daniel! If the police get involved here, they will confiscate my passport!"

"Julian didn't forge my signature on those power of attorney documents, Claire. You did. Julian didn't take a picture of an infinity pool and tell me I was depressing while my father was in a casket. You did."

"I was stupid! I made a mistake!" she sobbed, completely breaking down. "Please, Daniel, just pay the resort! Send me a coach ticket home! We can sit down and talk about this! We can fix this! I’ll sign whatever you want!"

"It's too late for that," I said, repeating the exact words I had spoken that morning. "Enjoy the rest of your trip, Claire."

I hung up the receiver and gently placed it back on the wall mount.

Across the room, Marcus Vance gave a slow nod of approval. "The resort in the Maldives has very strict policies regarding international guest fraud. If they cannot pay, their passports will be held by local immigration until the debt is cleared or an international guarantor steps in. And Julian’s partners in New York just revoked his corporate expense privileges twenty minutes ago. They are entirely on their own."

I looked down at the papers on Dad’s desk. "What happens next?"

"Next," Marcus said, opening his briefcase to reveal a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents, "we take back everything that belongs to you."
