Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Narcissist

The spectacle on Broad Street was caught on three dozen smartphone cameras and uploaded to social media within forty minutes.

Daniel Bennett and Madison Cole were escorted through the revolving brass doors of the Union League by building security and two armed police officers. Madison was weeping hysterical mascara-stained tears into her hands, covering her face as corporate reporters and local news crews—tipped off by Marcus Vance—shoved microphones into their path.

“Mr. Bennett! Are the embezzlement allegations true?”

“Did you divert twelve million dollars while your wife was undergoing cancer treatment?”

“Is Vantage Logistics suing you for corporate fraud?”

Daniel stumbled down the marble steps, shielding his eyes with his hand—the very hand that still wore his wedding ring. He lunged toward the curb, expecting his chauffeured black town car.

Instead, the driver locked the doors, rolled down the window two inches, and called out, “Company vehicle, Mr. Bennett. Mrs. Bennett cancelled your authorization.”

Madison turned on him right there on the sidewalk, screaming at the top of her lungs. “You told me you had everything under control! You told me she was practically dead! You ruined my career, you bastard!”

She threw her designer bag at his chest, hailed a yellow cab, and slammed the door, leaving Daniel standing alone on the cold pavement in his custom Italian suit, surrounded by flashing cameras and sneering onlookers.

Within forty-eight hours, the story went viral across LinkedIn, Facebook, and national business news. The headline was merciless: Tech Logistics Mogul Stripped of Company and Arrested After Abandoning Sick Wife for Miami Penthouse.

Daniel’s social circle vanished overnight. Country club memberships were revoked. Former business partners refused his calls. The forensic audit uncovered an additional three million dollars in unauthorized offshore accounts, prompting the district attorney to file felony fraud charges. Faced with prison time and complete bankruptcy, Daniel was forced to surrender his entire share of the condo, his luxury vehicles, and his remaining liquid assets just to avoid immediate pretrial detention.

Two weeks later, Daniel sat in a drab, fluorescent-lit attorney’s conference room, wearing a cheap off-the-rack suit that hung loosely on his sunken frame.

Across the metal table sat Claire’s divorce lawyer, who slid a single document across the table.

Full restitution. Uncontested divorce. Complete surrender of all claims to Bennett-Reed Logistics.

Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking violently. “Can I just talk to her? Just five minutes? Tell her I’m sorry? Tell her I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to her?”

Claire’s attorney smiled thinly, capping his gold pen. “Mrs. Bennett has no interest in your apologies, Mr. Daniel. She has a life to live. Sign the papers.”

With a trembling hand, Daniel signed his own corporate and personal obituary.
