Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Madison stepped forward, her face flushing with indignant rage. “Mrs. Bennett, this is a private executive transaction! You have no legal standing to interrupt an official corporate merger!”
Claire didn't even glance at her. “Sit down, Madison, before the security team escorts you out in front of the building’s lobby cameras.”
“Daniel!” Madison turned to him, panicked. “Tell her to leave!”
Daniel slammed his palms onto the mahogany table, trying to reassert dominance. “That is enough! Claire, you have crossed an unforgivable line! I don't know what kind of pathetic scene you’re trying to stage with Nathan Reed, but my power of attorney over our joint shares gives me sole authority to execute this contract!”
Arthur Sterling cleared his throat. The sound silenced the entire room.
“Mr. Bennett,” Sterling said coldly, sliding a document across the table. “At nine-thirty this morning, the Delaware Chancery Court issued an emergency freeze on Beacon Crest Partners. Furthermore, the SEC was notified of fraudulent diversion of corporate assets from Bennett Logistics to an unauthorized shell entity bearing Ms. Cole's name.”
Daniel’s knees literally shook. He grabbed the back of a chair to steady himself. “That’s... that’s an administrative misunderstanding! That was an intellectual property reserve!”
“It was grand larceny, Daniel,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “You stole twelve million dollars from the company I helped you build while I was sitting in a hospital room vomiting into a plastic bowl.”
Madison backed away from Daniel as if he were radioactive. “I... I was only following his instructions! He told me it was approved by the board! I’m just an employee!”
“You’re an employee who booked a seven-night oceanfront suite on the company credit card while my wife was undergoing chemotherapy,” Nathan Reed interjected, his deep voice rolling across the table like thunder. “And as of twelve o'clock today, Meridian Freight has completed the acquisition of all outstanding debt notes of Bennett Logistics. We have merged our corporate boards.”
Nathan walked over to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and held it out.
Claire walked over and sat down in the Chairman’s seat.
Daniel stared at his wife, completely unhinged. “You can't do this! You can't take my company! I created this!”
“You created nothing without my money, my code, and my patience,” Claire said coldly. “Marcus, execute the board resolution.”
Marcus Vance picked up a typed sheet. “By unanimous vote of the board of directors, Daniel Bennett is hereby terminated as Chief Executive Officer and removed as Chairman of the Board, effective immediately. His company security access is revoked, his executive options are cancelled for cause, and his personal accounts are frozen pending forensic restitution.”
Two uniformed Philadelphia police officers stepped through the boardroom doors, followed by building security.
Daniel’s eyes darted wildly between the officers, the stone-faced board members, and his wife. The polished, handsome, distinguished executive had vanished. In his place stood a terrified, ruined coward.
“Claire... please,” Daniel whispered, stepping toward her, his hands trembling. “Don’t do this to me. We’re husband and wife. Eight years! We can talk about this!”
Claire looked at him with neither hatred nor affection—only the absolute, crushing emptiness of indifference.
“When you left for Miami on Monday morning,” Claire said softly, “you asked me where your sunglasses were. You couldn't even bother to remember what time my chemo started.”

She pointed toward the double doors.
“Get out of my building.”
