Chapter 5 - The Gates Lock

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute, stretching so long that for a moment I thought Dorian had dropped the phone onto the bare hardwood floor. Then came a strange, wet sound—the sound of a man gasping for air as if he had been struck violently in the solar plexus with a sledgehammer.

“You... you’re lying,” Dorian stammered, his voice pitching high into a hollow, pathetic squeak. “You’re bluffing. You couldn't sell this house without my signature. We’re married! The spousal conveyance laws in North Carolina require both spouses to sign the deed of trust!”

Evelyn March smiled serenely at the speaker. “Not when a valid Free Trader Agreement and recorded Quitclaim Deed exist in the public registry, Dorian. You surrendered all marital rights to the real property six years ago in exchange for Rowan paying off your eighty-thousand-dollar personal gambling debt to avoid your disbarment from the financial sector. Did you honestly forget about that document? Because the title insurance underwriter certainly didn't.”

“Dorian... what does she mean, she sold the house?!” Callie screamed in the background, her voice cracking into pure hysteria. “You told me this was our wedding present! You told me Daddy gave his blessing because you were bringing me into a five-million-dollar estate! You swore to me this was yours!”

Before Dorian could formulate another sentence, a loud, abrasive honking echoed through the phone’s receiver from outside the mansion, followed by the heavy rumble of multiple large commercial diesel engines and the distinct wail of a police siren.

“What the hell is that?” Dorian muttered, his panic now bleeding through every syllable.

Through the phone, we heard the sound of heavy boots pounding up the exterior limestone steps. The massive double doors were swung open without a knock, banging violently against the interior sheetrock.

“Who the hell are you?!” Dorian yelled, trying desperately to reassert his shattered dominance. “Get out of my house! You are trespassing on private property!”

A deep, commanding voice boomed through the empty foyer. “Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department. Step away from the doorway and keep your hands where we can see them. Mr. Dorian Pierce?”

“Yes, I am Dorian Pierce! Officer, thank God you’re here! My ex-wife has hired these criminals to—”

“Mr. Pierce, be quiet and listen to me,” the deputy interrupted with cold, mechanical authority. “I am Deputy Miller, serving an emergency Writ of Possession and Immediate Trespass Removal Order issued this morning by the Mecklenburg County District Court on behalf of Blackwood Harbor Capital LLC.”

“Blackwood Harbor? Who the hell is that?!” Dorian shouted.

“The recorded legal deed holders of this parcel,” Deputy Miller replied firmly. “As of yesterday at four-fifteen PM, Blackwood Harbor Capital owns this residence, the grounds, and the private dock. You, sir, along with the female accompanying you, have no legal lease, no deed, and no lawful authority to occupy this structure. The owners have formally requested immediate removal of all unauthorized trespassers.”

“Wait! No! This is an administrative mistake!” Dorian shrieked, his voice spiraling into complete, humiliating desperation. “My wife—my former wife—she committed fraud! I live here! My clothes are in the closets! Well, they were until she stole them! You can’t just throw me out! I am a senior vice president at Vance-Sterling Holdings!”

“Sir, we don't care where you work,” a second, sharper voice cut in over the receiver. It belonged to a tall, burly man in a tactical security vest—the regional operations manager for the new corporate buyers. “Our private security team is locking down this perimeter immediately. We have three locksmith vans waiting at the gate to re-key all exterior deadbolts and reprogram the master biometric security system. Furthermore, there is a commercial towing flatbed parked at the bottom of the drive preparing to impound that black Porsche Panamera blocking our access lane.”

“DON'T YOU TOUCH MY CAR!” Callie wailed, her voice reaching ear-splitting decibels. “Dorian, do something! Call my father! Call Arthur right now! Tell him to get the mayor on the phone!”

“Officer, please, you have to give us twenty-four hours!” Dorian pleaded, his arrogant swagger entirely dissolved into pathetic sniveling. “We have eighty high-profile guests arriving here at four o’clock for our wedding reception! The catering trucks are already en route! The floral arrangements cost thirty thousand dollars! If my father-in-law sees this, it will ruin my entire life!”

“Sir, you have exactly five minutes to gather whatever personal items you are carrying and walk down that driveway to the public road,” Deputy Miller declared without a shred of sympathy. “If you refuse to comply, you will be placed in handcuffs, charged with first-degree criminal trespass and obstruction of justice, and transported directly to the Mecklenburg County Jail. Your five minutes start right now.”

“Rowan!” Dorian screamed into the phone, his voice shaking with absolute terror and hatred. “Rowan, pick up! You can’t do this to me! Call off these cops! Rowan, please! I’ll give you whatever you want! Rowan!”

I picked up the phone, placed it close to my lips, and spoke with calm, unyielding finality.

“Dorian, you told me to get out of your house before you brought your new wife home. You told me you built this life, and that I was lucky to share it. Well, Dorian... the house is gone. The life is gone. And now, you are standing in an empty room, holding an empty key, with nothing left to your name. Enjoy your reception.”

I tapped the red button and ended the call.

In the conference room, absolute silence reigned for three seconds. Then, David Vance leaned forward, his face dark and grim, and looked directly at Special Agent Burke.

“It’s time, Thomas,” David Vance said quietly. “Let’s pull the trigger on the federal warrants.”
