Chapter 2 - The Fall from Grace

The ballroom smelled of imported lilies, expensive perfume, and old money. Chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the vaulted gold-leaf ceiling, casting glittering light across two hundred of the state’s most influential moguls, politicians, and socialites.

I stood near the perimeter, scanning the crowd. It didn’t take long to find them. Daniel was leaning against a marble pillar near the center terrace, clutching a flute of vintage brut. He wore a rented tuxedo that was slightly too tight across the shoulders, laughing far too loudly at the jokes of an elderly city councilman.

Beside him stood Vanessa Cole. She looked breathtaking in an ivory satin gown cut low at the shoulders. But my gaze didn’t stop at her dress.

Resting squarely against her pale collarbone was the sapphire.

The room spun beneath my heels. The stone captured the overhead chandeliers, gleaming with that familiar, intense midnight-blue fire. Near the silver clasp, I could see the minute, diagonal scratch my mother had made when she accidentally caught it on her watch clasp thirty years ago. Vanessa stroked the sapphire with manicured red fingernails, laughing and batting her eyelashes at Daniel.

Daniel looked down at her with an expression I hadn't seen directed at me in half a decade—adoration, excitement, hunger. He leaned down and whispered something in her ear, and Vanessa giggled, pressing her hand against his lapel with the casual intimacy of a woman who owned him.

I felt my heart turn entirely to stone. Every sacrifice I had made over the last four years—the endless caretaking of his bitter mother, the surrender of my architectural license, the lonely nights reheating dinners in a dark kitchen—flashed before my eyes like a bad movie.

I took a slow breath, squared my shoulders, and began walking toward them.

Vanessa saw me first. As I stepped within three feet of their table, her laughter dried up. Her eyes tracked down my simple, off-the-rack navy dress, her gaze sharpening into cold malice. Instead of backing away, she took an deliberate, exaggerated step backward, twisting her wrist.

The crystal glass tipped. Cold, sticky champagne drenched the front of my dress, soaking through the navy fabric from my chest down to my waist.

The glass shattered on the parquet floor with a loud, ringing crack. The surrounding conversation died instantly. Dozens of tuxedo-clad guests turned their heads toward the commotion.

"Oh my God," Vanessa gasped, clamping one hand over her mouth. Her eyes were bright with vicious triumph. "I'm so incredibly clumsy! I didn't even see you standing there." She paused, letting her eyes rake over my drenched clothes before raising her voice just enough for the surrounding circle to hear. "Are you with the hotel staff? Because you really shouldn't be wandering through the private patron tables."

A few people nearby chuckled under their breath, shaking their heads at the perceived awkwardness of an incompetent server.

I didn't blink. I didn't wipe the cold champagne running down my collar. I locked eyes with my husband.

Daniel’s face flushed an ugly, furious purple. He stepped in front of Vanessa, his eyes darting frantically around the room to see who was watching. "Nora," he hissed under his breath. "What on earth are you doing here? Did you follow me?"

"You stole my mother's necklace," I said, my voice eerily calm, cutting through the murmurs.

Vanessa touched the sapphire and looked at Daniel with exaggerated innocence. "Daniel, darling? Who is this crazy woman? You know her?"

Daniel didn't hesitate. To protect his fragile reputation, to keep his golden chance at the Harbor Point deal alive, he threw six years of our life into the incinerator.

"She’s no one," Daniel said coldly, loud enough for everyone around us to hear clearly. "Just a former acquaintance who has boundary issues. Security!"

He raised his hand toward the edge of the floor. Two imposing security guards in matching black suits immediately started walking in our direction.

"I think this woman needs to be escorted out of the building immediately," Daniel ordered, adjusting his cuffs. "She’s trespassing and harassing the guests."

The guards closed in. One of them reached out to touch my arm.

Then, every house light in the grand ballroom snapped off, plunging the room into darkness.
