Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

Nathan stared at me as if I had spoken in a foreign language. ""Without me? You can't run this company without me! I am the face of Carter Development! The city council knows me! The investors know me!""
""The city council knows you're two weeks late on permit filings,"" I answered cleanly. ""And the investors know you haven't delivered a single transparent quarterly report in six months. The only thing you were the face of, Nathan, was the marketing brochures.""
Marcus Cole stood up, pulling a bound legal decree from his briefcase and placing it squarely in front of Nathan. ""Mr. Carter, as of nine-fifteen this morning, Mrs. Emily Carter has officially exercised her rights under Clause 14. You are hereby relieved of all duties as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Board, and Authorized Signatory of Carter Development LLC and all affiliated subsidiaries. Effective immediately, your access to corporate accounts, credit cards, email servers, and company facilities is revoked.""
Nathan snatched the document, his hands shaking so violently the paper rattled. ""This is illegal! I will sue you! I will tie this up in North Carolina Superior Court until you don't have a single penny left to your name!""
""With what money, Nathan?"" Marcus asked coldly. ""Your personal accounts currently show an aggregate overdraft of forty-two thousand dollars across three banks. Your Porsche is leased under the corporate fleet account—which has just been locked. The penthouse lease you signed in Valerie's name downtown was paid through Carter Development operational funds—which have been frozen by First Piedmont Bank pending audit. You don't have enough personal liquidity to pay a parking ticket, let alone retain commercial litigation counsel.""
Valerie suddenly turned on Nathan, her soft, polished demeanor vanishing in an instant, replaced by sharp, feral panic. ""Nathan! What is he talking about? You told me you owned sixty percent of the equity outright! You told me Emily was just a quiet partner who had no real say in the management! You told me that transfer was completely authorized!""
""Shut up, Valerie!"" Nathan hissed, sweat pouring down his temple. ""Just shut the hell up!""
""No, you shut up!"" Valerie snapped, her voice shrill, entirely devoid of the poise she had paraded around Diane’s dining table yesterday. ""I gave up my client roster in Charlotte for this! If the Attorney General investigates those wire transfers, my professional license is finished! You swore to me your wife was completely under your thumb!""
Diane looked back and forth between her son and his mistress, her face ashen, looking as though she had aged ten years in ten minutes. ""Nathan... how could you? How could you bring this woman into our lives, into our home, and do this to our family name?""
""Your family name?"" I spoke up, drawing Diane’s horrified gaze back to me. ""Diane, yesterday you sat at your dining table and told me that sometimes two people simply grow in different directions. You smiled while your son insulted my dignity in front of his sister and cousins. You were perfectly happy to discard me the moment you thought Valerie was a shinier accessory for your social circles. You didn't care about ethics, you didn't care about loyalty, and you certainly didn't care about truth. You only cared about prestige.""
Diane began to weep silently, dabbing at her mascara with a trembling lace handkerchief. ""Emily... please. Nathan made a terrible mistake. He was seduced. He wasn't thinking clearly. Think of the family. Think of what your father would say if he saw this company torn apart!""
""My father would tell me to cut out the rot before the gangrene kills the patient,"" I said without a shred of pity. ""And Nathan is the rot.""
Arthur Vance cleared his throat, commanding the room once more. ""Nathan, Ms. Monroe, Mrs. Diane Carter, you have five minutes to vacate these executive offices. First Piedmont Bank is entering an exclusive restructuring negotiation with Mrs. Emily Carter as the sole interim Managing Director. If you do not leave voluntarily, building security and the Raleigh Police Department will escort you from the premises.""
Nathan looked at Arthur, then at Marcus, and finally at me. For the first time in his life, he realized that his charm, his tailored suits, and his mother’s high-society pedigree had completely failed him. The world he had built on lies and stolen money had evaporated right beneath his polished Italian shoes.
""Emily..."" he whispered, his eyes wide, stepping toward me with his hands slightly raised in desperation. ""Please. Let’s go home and talk. We can fix this. Just you and me. I’ll fire Valerie right now. I’ll never see her again. I swear it! Just sign the extension and save the project. Don't throw away ten years of marriage over this!""
May you like
I looked at him—really looked at him—and wondered how I had ever loved someone so hollow, so cowardly, and so small.
""Our marriage ended yesterday when you put your hand on her chair and called me unrefined,"" I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls. ""Now get out of my sight.""
