Chapter 8 - The Shadow Across the River

While the corporate war was won, a darker storm was brewing on the edges of the city. Raymond’s aggressive moves to dismantle Grant Hollis’s network had stepped on the toes of the Morretti syndicate—an old, violent faction across the river that had secretly been laundering money through Grant's offshore accounts.

Hazel was finishing a review of the foundation's budget late on a Thursday evening when the power suddenly cut out in the penthouse.

The sparkling skyline was instantly extinguished as emergency backup batteries hummed to life, casting long, eerie amber shadows across the living room floor. Hazel stood up, her instincts immediately on high alert.

""Raymond?"" she called out softly.

Silence answered her.

Then, the heavy reinforced front doors gave a sharp, metallic screech. The electronic keypad on the wall sparked violently and died.

Three men dressed in dark tactical gear slipped through the entryway, their weapons fitted with long, cylindrical suppressors. They moved with military precision, fanning out across the foyer.

Hazel's heart slammed violently against her ribs. She backed away toward the kitchen, reaching blindly for the heavy chef's knife resting in the wooden block.

""Mrs. Marquetti,"" the lead man hissed, his voice cold and raspy through a balaclava. ""Don't make a sound. Anthony Morretti sends his regards. He wants to know how much your husband values his new bride.""

Hazel gripped the knife, her knuckles turning bone-white. ""If you take one more step, you won't leave this penthouse alive.""

The man chuckled, a sickening, low sound. He raised his suppressed pistol.

A deafening crack shattered the silence.

The lead intruder jerked violently and collapsed onto the hardwood, a dark stain blossoming across his chest. Behind him stood Raymond, holding a sleek matte-black firearm with deadly, casual competence.

The other two men spun around, firing blindly into the shadows. Raymond moved like a wraith, diving behind the marble pillar, returning fire with terrifying precision. Two more muffled pops echoed through the room, followed by the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the floor.

Within four seconds, the fight was over.

Smoke hung heavy in the air, smelling of sulfur and burnt copper.

Raymond stepped out of the darkness, his weapon lowered. His gaze swept across the room until it locked onto Hazel. When he saw her standing by the island, trembling but holding the knife steady, the ice in his face shattered.

He crossed the room in two strides, dropping the weapon onto the counter and pulling her roughly into his arms.

""Are you hurt?"" he demanded, his hands framing her face, his thumbs feverishly checking her cheeks, her neck, her arms. ""Did they touch you? Hazel, look at me.""

""I'm... I'm fine,"" she breathed, the adrenaline finally crashing over her, causing her knees to buckle.

Raymond caught her effortlessly, lifting her against his chest as if she weighed nothing at all. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his broad shoulders shaking with a tension she had never seen in him before.

""They're dead,"" Raymond whispered fiercely against her skin. ""No one touches you. Ever.""

In that moment, wrapped in the arms of the city's most feared kingpin, Hazel realized she was no longer playing a part. She didn't want the six months to end.
