Chapter 2 - The Contract in Blood and Ink

The penthouse occupied the top three floors of the St. Jude Tower, an impenetrable glass fortress overlooking the city harbor. Hazel had never seen anything like it. Floor-to-ceiling glass panes exposed the sprawling, glittery grid of the metropolis below, but Hazel could only focus on the sprawling mahogany desk in the center of the library.

Raymond shed his tailored coat, tossing it carelessly onto a leather settee, and rolled his crisp white cuffs up his forearms. Intricate black ink crawled beneath his skin—a sprawling snake coiled around an ancient dagger, disappearing into the dark wrist of his watch.

""Sit,"" he said, gesturing toward the high-backed wing chair.

Hazel sat, her spine stiff as a board. She reached into her handbag and placed the crumpled refinancing papers on the mahogany finish. ""These are the student loans Grant put in my name when we were twenty-one. If he doesn't sign the transfer, the state will garnish my teaching paycheck next Tuesday. I will literally be evicted.""

Raymond didn't even look at the documents. Instead, he slid a thick, bound folder across the polished wood. The cover was bound in midnight-blue leather, stamped with a silver crest.

""Grant's signature is worthless,"" Raymond said, taking a crystal glass of bourbon from a discreet side cart and offering her nothing, knowing she wouldn't accept. ""Tomorrow morning, Hollis Academy will receive an emergency audit from the state board, followed by a freeze on all domestic assets by my banking partners. Those three papers of yours will be shredded into dust by the morning.""

""You can't just destroy his business overnight,"" Hazel whispered, stunned.

""I can, and I already have begun the process,"" Raymond countered, his gaze burning into hers. ""Open the file.""

Hazel pulled the ribbon. Inside were eight neatly typed pages of legal jargon, bearing the header of the highest-rated corporate law firm on the eastern seaboard. Her eyes skimmed the first paragraph, and her stomach dropped.

MARITAL SETTLEMENT AND STRATEGIC ALLIANCE AGREEMENT.

""This is a marriage contract,"" she gasped, looking up at him in sheer disbelief. ""You said that in the ballroom just to shut him up!""

""I don't say words merely to hear the sound of my own voice, Hazel,"" Raymond said, stepping around the perimeter of the desk until he was standing directly over her. He smelled overwhelmingly of spice, rain, and untamed dominance. ""The Marquetti family requires a legitimate face for our newly acquired educational holdings. You have a clean record, a master's degree in curriculum design, and the copyright records proving you wrote every word of the Hollis system.""

""You want to marry me to seize Grant's company?""

""I want to marry you to destroy Grant Hollis completely, and to build an empire that bears your real name,"" Raymond corrected softly. He bent down slightly, bringing his face level with hers. ""For six months, you will act as my wife. You will wear my ring. You will attend every gala, every press briefing, and sit at the head of every board meeting. In exchange, your student loans will be paid off tonight. Your bank account will be credited with five million dollars tomorrow morning. And Grant Hollis will be reduced to begging for scraps on the pavement where he left you.""

Hazel stared at the bold, terrifying document. Five years of Grant mocking her plain clothes. Five years of Sloan taking her homemade lesson plans and slapping her own name on them. Five years of living off ramen while Grant drove sports cars purchased with her ideas.

""What do you get out of this?"" Hazel demanded, her pride refusing to bend. ""Don't tell me it's just about the money. A man like you doesn't need five million dollars.""

""I get the pleasure of reminding this city who holds the leash,"" Raymond said, his thumb brushing against her jawline with unexpected tenderness. His touch sent a strange, electric shiver racing down her spine. ""And perhaps... I simply wanted to see the look on his face when he realized the queen he discarded was claimed by the king.""

Hazel looked down at the pen on the table. The silence between them stretched, heavy and dangerous. Slowly, deliberately, she picked up the golden pen, uncapped it, and signed her name across the final line.
