Chapter 4 - The Predator Returns

The threatening envelope arrived at Second Rise Bakery on a rainy Tuesday morning, tucked into the daily supplier invoices.
Inside was a single typed letter demanding two hundred thousand dollars in cash, along with copies of the old forged promissory notes. The final line sent ice through Naomi's veins: Pay up, little baker, or your grandmother’s nursing home will hear about your fraudulent history.
Colin Mercer was back.
He had burned through the stolen bakery money in offshore sports betting, and now he had returned to Philadelphia to bleed her dry again.
Naomi's first instinct was to tell Luca, but she knew what Luca would do. Luca would send men like Marco, blood would be spilled, and the fragile peace they were building would shatter into violent chaos.
She couldn't bear the thought of Luca going to prison or becoming the monster his father was, especially now that she carried his unborn baby.
"I have to settle this cleanly," she told Tessa, who was pale with worry behind the bakery counter. "I will meet him in a crowded public place, show him the legal paperwork proving the forgery, and tell him to disappear."
"You're out of your mind, Naomi!" Tessa hissed, grabbing her arm. "Colin is unhinged. Tell your husband! That man practically owns this city!"
"If Luca gets involved, someone dies, Tessa," Naomi said firmly, clutching her purse where the legal documents and the ultrasound photo rested side by side. "I won't let my child's father become a murderer."
She agreed to meet Colin at an old brick-walled coffee shop three miles away from Passyunk Avenue, far from the Bellini territory.
The rain poured heavily against the café window as Colin slid into the booth across from her, wearing an expensive suit purchased with stolen cash.
"You look different, Naomi," Colin sneered, looking her up and down with greasy familiarity. "Softer. Who’s paying for your clothes these days?"
"Sign the formal retraction regarding the fraudulent loan, Colin," Naomi said coldly, sliding the legal contract across the table. "Our lawyers have already traced the IP addresses to your condo in Florida. If you don't sign, the FBI gets the file."
Colin's jaw tightened in fury, his arrogant facade slipping to reveal the violent predator underneath.
He leaned forward, slamming his fist onto the small table so hard that coffee sloshed over the rims of the cups. "You think you can threaten me, you stupid little girl?"
As Naomi reached into her purse to retrieve her phone to call the authorities, the ultrasound picture slipped out.

It fluttered through the air and landed faceup between their coffee cups.
And in that horrifying instant, Colin’s hand grabbed the image, unleashing a nightmare she thought she had escaped years ago.
