Chapter 6 - When The Truth Explodes

""Gideon! What happened?!"" Lorraine screamed, rushing across the terrace to kneel beside her golden son.

Gideon scrambled to his feet, adjusting his torn cuff, his face purple with rage and embarrassment. ""Declan attacked me, Mom! He brought a girl here to spread lies, and when I confronted him, he assaulted me!""

Aunt Beatrice immediately rounded on Declan, her finger jabbing at his chest. ""I knew it! I knew you'd bring your bitterness into this hall! You couldn't stand seeing your brother happy! You belong in jail, you jealous freak!""

""Beatrice, shut your mouth,"" a commanding voice cut across the patio.

Declan’s father, Richard Mercer, stepped forward through the crowd. He was a retired mill manager who rarely spoke at family gatherings, preferring quiet corners. But tonight, his face was carved from granite.

""Richard, your son just beat up his brother on his wedding day!"" Beatrice squawked.

""I said shut up, Bea,"" Richard growled. He turned to Elena, who was backing away toward the kitchen doors. ""Young lady. Come here.""

Elena hesitated, but the steady authority in Richard's eyes made her stop. She stepped forward, holding out her phone. ""Mr. Mercer, your son offered me cash to sleep with him on Thursday. He’s been texting me since three o'clock today asking me to meet him in the parking lot tonight. Here are the messages. Here is his number.""

Richard took the phone. He read in silence for nearly two full minutes. The only sound on the terrace was the wind rattling the dry oak leaves and Vanessa’s ragged, stifled sobs.

When Richard looked up, his eyes were cold as frozen iron. He walked over to Gideon, who shrank back against his mother.

""Dad... listen to me, she's lying, she set me up—""

Slap.

The crack of Richard’s palm across Gideon's cheek echoed off the stone walls. Lorraine screamed and covered her mouth. Gideon stumbled backward, clutching his stinging face in sheer terror.

""You disgrace,"" Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a father's deepest shame. ""Your brother nearly died eighteen months ago. We watched him struggle to speak, struggle to eat, struggle to look in the mirror. And while he was fighting for his life, you were scheming how to take his wife. And the very day you marry her, you're sniffing around the waitstaff like a stray dog.""

Richard handed the phone back to Elena and pulled out his wallet, handing the girl a crisp fold of bills. ""Thank you for telling the truth. Go home, child.""

Elena took the money, nodded respectfully to Declan, and disappeared into the club.

Richard turned his gaze onto Vanessa, who was curled on a stone bench, her elaborate veil tangled in her hair. ""Vanessa. You made your choice. You wanted the brother who looked whole on the outside. Now you can live with what's on the inside.""

Richard turned on his heel, walked over to Declan, and placed a heavy, weathered hand on his elder son’s shoulder.

""I’m sorry, Declan,"" the old man said, his voice cracking with emotion. ""Your mother and I were cowards. We wanted peace so badly we let you carry all the rot alone. Can you ever forgive an old fool?""

Declan swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded slowly. ""Let's just go home, Dad.""

Declan looked around the terrace. Aunt Beatrice was staring at the floor, utterly mute, stripped of every shred of self-righteous venom. Gideon was sobbing into his hands, leaning against the cold wall, abandoned by everyone.

Then Declan saw Laney standing by the French doors, her hazel eyes glistening with tears, giving him the warmest, proudest smile he had ever seen.
