Chapter 4 - The Whisper In The Garden

The reception had turned into a minefield. Following Laney's impromptu toast, the atmosphere shifted radically. Several family friends who had spent months tiptoeing around Declan came over to shake his hand, looking at him with genuine respect for the first time since his accident.

""You're a menace, Laney Vance,"" Declan murmured as they slipped out through the French doors onto the manicured stone terrace.

""I told you I wasn't going to let them treat you like a museum exhibit,"" she replied, leaning against the stone balustrade and looking out over the moonlit golf course. ""Besides, your brother walked right into that. People like him are so used to smiling through betrayals that they collapse the second someone names the truth.""

Declan stood beside her, the cool evening breeze soothing his skin. For months, the scar on his face had felt like a brand of shame. But tonight, standing under the Pittsburgh stars beside this fiery, unpredictable woman, he felt something he hadn't felt in nearly two years: pride.

""Declan.""

The voice was low, sharp, and unmistakably Vanessa’s.

Declan turned. His ex-wife stood on the terrace threshold, clutching a wrap around her bare shoulders. Her bridal veil was pushed back, her lips pressed into a tight, trembling line.

""Delaney, could you give us a moment?"" Vanessa demanded, not even looking at Laney. ""This is private family business.""

Laney looked at Declan, raising an eyebrow in question.

Declan nodded gently. ""I'll be right here, Laney.""

Laney squeezed his hand lightly before stepping back inside, leaving the glass doors slightly ajar.

""What do you think you’re doing?"" Vanessa hissed, closing the distance between them. ""Did you hire an escort just to humiliate me on my wedding day?""

Declan let out a dry, incredulous laugh. ""Is that really what you think, Vanessa? That my entire life revolves around staging revenge against you?""

""Who is she, Declan? You don't have friends like that. You don't go out. You haven't dated anyone in eighteen months!"" Her voice was frantic, tinged with paranoia. ""You brought her here to make me look like a shallow monster!""

""You made yourself look like that the day you moved your clothes into Gideon's penthouse while I was still doing physical therapy,"" Declan said, his tone icy and flat. ""You don't need my help to look like what you are.""

Vanessa stepped closer, her eyes flashing with unshed tears. ""You don't know what it was like! You came home from the hospital bitter, withdrawn, broken! You wouldn't let me touch you, you wouldn't go to parties—""

""I was recovering from facial reconstruction and three broken ribs, Vanessa!"" Declan snapped, his voice finally breaking its calm exterior. ""I didn't want to go to cocktail parties because I could barely chew solid food! But instead of waiting for me to heal, you found a version of me that didn't have any flaws.""

Vanessa looked away, her jaw trembling. ""Gideon was there for me. He listened.""

""Gideon wanted what was mine,"" Declan said bluntly. ""He's been competing with me since we were eight years old. The moment I became vulnerable, he took the trophy off my mantle. But the funny thing is, Vanessa... you think you traded up.""

Vanessa glared at him. ""Gideon loves me. He treats me like a queen.""

""Does he?""

A voice spoke from the shadows near the garden trellis.

Declan and Vanessa both turned to see a young woman in a waitress uniform stepping out from behind the ivy-covered archway. She carried a tray of empty champagne flutes, her face pale, her hands shaking.

""He doesn't love you,"" the girl whispered, looking terrified but resolute. ""He told me the exact same thing in his car two nights ago.""
