Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession

At midnight, after the last guests had departed in their shuttle buses and the garden lights were being turned off one by one, our phone rang. It was an unknown number, but I recognized the frantic breathing on the other end immediately.
""Danny... please, don't hang up,"" Aaron sobbed into the receiver. His voice was completely broken, slurred with alcohol and panic. ""Martin locked me out of the office. He’s packing his bags at his penthouse. He told me I was on my own. He said the forged notary stamp had my fingerprint on it, not his. Danny, they’re going to put me in prison! You can't let them arrest your own brother!""
Claire stood beside me on the balcony of the bridal suite, wrapped in a plush robe, looking out over the moonlit garden where hours earlier our lives had changed forever. She placed a gentle, grounding hand on my shoulder, giving me the strength to hear the truth without crumbling.
""You should have thought about prison when you let Mom struggle to pay her heating bills last winter, Aaron,"" I said, my voice dead and emotionless. ""You sat at her kitchen table, ate her roast beef, and watched her count pennies for prescription medication, while you had four million dollars of Dad’s money sitting in an offshore account.""
""Martin made me do it!"" Aaron wailed. ""He threatened to ruin my career before it started! He told me Dad would have wanted the money kept in the family business!""
""Dad was the family business,"" I snapped. ""You didn't protect the family. You protected your sports car and your penthouse apartment. You sold our father’s legacy for bottle service and designer clothes.""
""What do you want from me?"" Aaron cried, completely unraveled. ""Tell me what to do! I’ll sign whatever Callahan wants! Just don't let the police come to my door!""
""Callahan will be at your apartment at seven o'clock tomorrow morning,"" I told him coldly. ""You will surrender every banking password, every title deed, and every penny remaining in those accounts. You will sign a full sworn affidavit detailing Martin’s orchestration of the fraud. And then, Aaron... you will pack your bags and leave this state.""
""Leave? Where am I supposed to go?""
May you like
""Anywhere that isn't near Mom, Claire, or me,"" I replied. ""You took four years of our lives. You don't get to be a brother anymore. You're just a co-conspirator who got caught.""
I ended the call before he could answer. I slid the phone onto the nightstand, my hands shaking with an exhaustion that ran deeper than bone. Claire walked over, pulling me into a fierce, silent embrace. We stood there together in the quiet room, listening to the crickets singing outside in the garden where my father’s memory had finally been vindicated.
