Chapter 2 - The Packing Box

Word of Julian Sterling’s catastrophic downfall spread through the thirty floors of Northstar Maritime like a wildfire in an oil refinery.
By noon, security guards had already escorted Julian from the building, leaving his high-priced designer luggage sitting on the curb in the Seattle rain.
I walked onto the finance floor carrying an empty cardboard banker's box, intending to collect my personal reference books and family photos from my tiny cubicle behind the copier.
The floor went completely silent as I stepped off the carpeted elevator lobby.
Colleagues who had spent the last two years treating me like an invisible errand girl suddenly froze at their desks, their eyes wide with fear and curiosity.
Vanessa Reed, Julian’s fiancée and the daughter of Northstar’s chief legal counsel, stood by the reception desk with her arms tightly crossed.
Her designer silk blouse looked wrinkled, and the smug, mocking laugh she had unleashed in the boardroom was completely gone, replaced by venomous fury.
"You think you're clever, don't you?" Vanessa spat as I approached, stepping directly into my path.
"You orchestrated this whole ambush. You fed Julian faulty numbers so you could play the martyr in front of Roman Collins!"
I didn't break my stride, forcing her to take an awkward step backward to avoid collision.
"Julian didn't know the difference between legal payload and structural failure, Vanessa," I said calmly, setting my box on my desk.
"I didn't have to sabotage him. His own arrogance did all the heavy lifting."
Vanessa’s face burned crimson, her voice rising into an hysterical screech that drew the attention of forty employees.
"My father is going to revoke your security clearance! You're nothing but a coffee fetcher who got lucky with a lucky spreadsheet! Julian built this division!"
"Julian couldn't balance a petty cash ledger without me holding his hand," I replied, carefully placing a framed photograph of my mother into the box.
"And if you check your father's inbox right now, you'll find that his legal retainer has been placed under independent forensic review by Collins Global."
Vanessa gasped, clutching her designer leather purse to her chest as if she had been struck.
"You're lying!"
Before I could answer, the heavy double doors of the executive suite opened.
Two men in dark tailored suits walked onto the floor, led by Roman Collins' personal chief of security, a towering former naval officer named Drake.
"Miss Vance?" Drake asked, stopping beside my desk and offering a crisp, respectful nod.
"Yes, Drake?"
"Mr. Collins instructed us to carry your personal effects to the thirty-fifth floor executive suite," Drake announced loudly, his voice echoing across the open floor.
"Your corporate access credentials have been upgraded to Level Five clearance, effective immediately."
Drake turned toward Vanessa, his expression hardening into cold granite.
"Miss Reed, your personal vehicle is parked in an executive reserved bay. Move it immediately, or port security will impound it at your expense."
Vanessa let out a strangled, humiliated gasp, spun on her high heels, and fled toward the stairwell, her sobs echoing down the tiled hall.
Drake and his partner picked up my single cardboard box, while Drake handed me a brand-new platinum encrypted keycard bearing my name:
CLARA VANCE — SPECIAL ADVISOR & CHIEF AUDIT DIRECTOR.

I took a deep, clean breath, looking around the cubicle maze I had inhabited for four exhausting years.
The days of taking blame for other people's incompetence were officially over.
