Chapter 3 - The Father's Fury

"You son of a bitch!" my father roared, pinning my billionaire husband against the wood paneling with the raw strength of an old New England ship captain. "You married my daughter to cannibalize my father's harbor terminals?"

"Dad! Stop!" I shouted, rushing forward and placing my hand firmly on my father’s shoulder. "Don't touch him. He isn't worth the police report."

My father’s breathing came in ragged, furious gasps.

His knuckles were white around Daniel’s collar, but he slowly released his grip, shoving Daniel backward into the dining chair.

Daniel collapsed onto the cushions, coughing violently, rubbing his reddened neck with trembling hands.

"You're done, Daniel," my father breathed, pointing a shaking finger at him. "Every dock, every warehouse, every deed my family owned that you used to prop up your fraudulent credit lines—we are pulling all of it back tomorrow morning."

"You can't," Patricia croaked from the corner, though her voice lacked any of its former venom. "The contracts are signed. The merger was approved by the probate court three years ago."

"The probate court approved a standard joint asset union, Mrs. Whitmore," Arthur Bennett chimed in, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "However, pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes Section 46b-36g, any premarital agreement or subsequent asset pledge obtained through criminal misrepresentation, concealed debt, or premeditated fraud is void ab initio."

Mr. Bennett pulled a third document from his briefcase—this one stamped with the blue official seal of the Hartford Superior Court.

"An emergency restraining order was signed by Judge Thornton forty minutes ago," Bennett announced. "All personal and corporate bank accounts linked to Daniel Whitmore, Marcus Whitmore, and the Whitmore Family Trust are frozen pending federal grand jury review."

Marcus’s face went chalk-white.

He frantically pulled out his phone, attempting to log into his private wealth banking portal.

The screen flashed a bright red error message: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED. CONTACT COMPLIANCE.

"No, no, no!" Marcus panicked, pacing back and forth across the dining room, running his fingers through his manicured hair. "I didn't sign the transfer authorizations! Daniel did! I only handled the real estate appraisals!"

"You co-signed seven shell leases in Greenwich, Marcus," I said, looking at my smug brother-in-law with unyielding disdain. "You took a four-hundred-thousand-dollar finder’s fee from the pension reserve account to pay off your sports car loans."

Marcus froze in place, staring at me as if I were a ghost who had returned from the dead.

"How... how do you know all this?" Daniel gasped, looking up from the chair with hollow, haunted eyes. "You were just home with the baby. You never looked at the office files."

"I have a master’s degree in forensic auditing from Columbia, Daniel," I replied, tilting my head with a faint, bitter smile. "You spent five years assuming that because I gave up my career to raise Lily, my brain had simply stopped functioning."

I walked over to the dining table, picked up the bogus DNA report Daniel had thrown at me twenty minutes earlier, and tore it in half.

I tossed the two pieces directly onto his lap.

"You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet when your mother insulted my cooking," I said. "You thought I was naive because I didn't question your late-night business trips to Zurich. But while you were busy spending your evenings drinking champagne with Evelyn in Greenwich, I was spending my nights mapping every single penny you stole from your own employees."

The grandfather clock in the corner of the dining room began to strike nine.

The heavy front door of the mansion rattled on its hinges.

Through the frosted glass side panels, flashing blue and red emergency lights illuminated the driveway outside, reflecting against the crystal chandelier.

The police had arrived.
