Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Equipped with the audio evidence from Chloe, Ben didn't go to Northline. He marched straight to the headquarters of Apex Global Development on Madison Avenue.

With Marcus Vance trailing behind him, sweating and terrified after Ben had confronted him in the car about his brother’s corporate espionage, Ben kicked open the conference room doors where Jonathan Vance and Mia Lawson were sitting comfortably with three corporate brokers, reviewing acquisition documents for Northline’s Harbor Point asset.

Mia was dressed not in her sweet, innocent floral blouses, but in a tailored black designer dress, laughing casually with a cigar-smoking Jonathan. When she saw Ben, the false innocence vanished instantly from her eyes, replaced by cold, calculating defiance.

“Mr. Kendall,” Jonathan Vance drawled, leaning back in his executive chair. “I believe you’re trespassing on private property.”

Ben slammed the flash drive down onto the center of their glass conference table. He didn't scream. He didn't rage. His voice was lower, deadlier than it had ever been in his entire life.

“On that drive is the uncompressed audio from the Soho Grand Hotel last Tuesday,” Ben said, staring directly at Mia. “Where you, Mia, explicitly detail how you were going to use internal HR complaints to trigger Section 14B in Kendall Ridge’s loan agreement to force Northline into default. It also contains your personal offshore account routing number in the Cayman Islands where Jonathan wired your first fifty-thousand-dollar deposit.”

Mia’s face drained of every drop of color. Her hands began to shake as she pushed back from the table. “Jonathan... how did he—”

“Shut up, Mia!” Jonathan snapped, leaping to his feet, his arrogant smirk instantly evaporating into sheer panic. “Kendall, whatever you think you have—”

“I don’t think I have it, Jonathan,” Ben interrupted, leaning across the table, his eyes burning with lethal fury. “Arthur Sterling doesn’t know his niece was secretly selling Northline’s proprietary data to Apex. The Manhattan District Attorney’s white-collar crime division received a copy of these audio files twenty minutes ago. You’re not buying Harbor Point tomorrow. You’re going to federal prison for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and extortion.”

Jonathan sank into his chair, utterly defeated, while Mia buried her face in her trembling hands, weeping genuine tears of terror for the first time.

Ben turned his back on them without another word. The legal victory was complete. The lawsuit was dismantled before it even officially hit the public docket. Northline’s debt covenant breach was nullified because the underlying misconduct claim was an established criminal conspiracy.

He had saved Northline Properties. He had saved three hundred million dollars.

Yet, when he stepped out onto the bustling sidewalk of Madison Avenue, the autumn wind blowing dry leaves across the concrete, there was no victory in his chest. No triumph. Only an echoing, hollow abyss.

He had spent weeks defending this girl. He had sat at dinner across from the woman who had bled for him at sixteen, the woman who had birthed his two children, and called this scheming snake “adorable.” He had told Laura that their life was boring. He had traded fourteen years of unconditional devotion, unyielding partnership, and profound, sacred love for an actress playing a part in a corporate scam.

A wave of nausea hit him so hard he had to steady himself against a lamppost. He pulled out his phone. He didn’t call his lawyers. He didn’t call PR to issue a press release clearing Northline’s name.

He called his mother-in-law’s private landline in Connecticut, knowing it was the only number Laura’s family hadn’t yet disconnected.

When Laura’s mother answered with a guarded “Hello, Benjamin,” Ben broke down completely on the street, sobbing so hard he could barely form words.

“Please,” he choked out, hot tears streaming down his face, oblivious to the pedestrians staring at him. “Please tell Laura I’m sorry. Please tell her I don’t care about Northline. I don’t care about the buildings. I just want my wife.”
