Chapter 2 - The House of Glass

The silence inside the grand dining room was louder than any scream. Daniel’s younger brother, Marcus, slowly set his wine glass down, the nervous smirk on his face completely dead. The arrogance that usually defined the Whitmore family had vanished, replaced by the naked, ugly reality of their financial destruction.
"Call our personal attorney right now, Daniel," Patricia hissed, clutching her pearls so hard her knuckles turned chalky white. "Call Richard Sterling! He wrote the trust! He will throw this ridiculous woman and her mercenary lawyer out onto the street where they belong!"
"Richard Sterling retired six months ago, Patricia," I said calmly. "And his successor is the firm representing me. Did you really think I spent the last three weeks weeping in the nursery while Daniel paraded around town with Julianna Vance?"
At the mention of Julianna’s name, Daniel’s head snapped up. The color drained entirely from his lips, leaving him looking sickly beneath the ambient light. Julianna was the daughter of an elite commercial real estate developer in Greenwich, a woman Patricia had desperately wanted Daniel to marry before he chose me. What Patricia hadn't known—or perhaps deliberately ignored—was that Daniel had revived his romance with Julianna the second our daughter was born, convincing himself that an infant was an inconvenience to his glamorous social life.
"You've been tracking me," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "You spied on me."
"I protected my daughter," I replied. "When your corporate credit card registered four consecutive weekends at a five-star chalet in Aspen while I was home administering nebulizer treatments to our sick baby, I didn't cry. I hired Mr. Bennett’s firm. I audited the accounts you thought you hid behind shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. And what did we find, Arthur?"
Mr. Bennett adjusted his glasses and read dispassionately from the ledger. "We discovered seven distinct wire transfers totaling twelve million four hundred thousand dollars, routed through a dummy entity titled 'JV Logistics.' Miss Vance used those funds to purchase a luxury penthouse in Manhattan and a private yacht currently docked in Miami. Embezzlement of trust assets, bank fraud, and falsification of sworn corporate filings."
"You ungrateful little viper!" Patricia suddenly lunged out of her seat toward me, her manicured nails aimed at my face.
Before she could reach me, my father stepped forward, his tall, weathered frame blocking her path. "Do not take another step toward my daughter, Patricia," he warned in a low, thunderous voice. "For five years, my family tolerated your condescension. We endured your snide remarks about our working-class roots. But you will not lay a hand on Claire, and you will certainly not insult my granddaughter."
"This is my house!" Patricia shrieked, her voice bouncing violently off the marble walls. "My husband built this empire! You can't steal it from us!"
"Your husband built this empire on integrity," I said, looking at the woman who had spent half a decade making me feel worthless. "An integrity that neither of your sons inherited. Robert knew Daniel would run this business into the ground trying to impress high-society sycophants. That’s why he established the safeguard. The house doesn't belong to you, Patricia. It belongs to the family trust. And as of today, I control ninety percent of that trust."
Daniel looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally, but his brother Marcus was already sliding his phone into his pocket, looking away. Marcus had always been a coward; the moment he smelled real legal danger, his loyalty to his older brother dissolved instantly.
"Claire, please," Daniel stammered, stepping toward me with his hands raised in surrender. "Let's be reasonable. We can talk about this privately. Think about Lily. You wouldn't want her parents caught in an ugly public scandal, would you? We can work through this. The DNA test... it was a misunderstanding. Marcus gave me bad advice! He told me—"
"Don't you dare blame me, Daniel!" Marcus snapped, jumping out of his chair. "You're the one who wanted to get rid of her so you could marry Julianna and use the trust money to cover your gambling debts!"

The truth burst through the cracks of their polished facade, raw and pathetic. I looked at the man I had once loved and felt nothing but profound pity.
"Pack your bags, Daniel," I said softly. "The locks are being changed tonight. Exactly as your mother recommended."
