Chapter 1 - The Doors of the Grand Meridian

The massive, gold-embossed double doors of the Grand Meridian ballroom rattled as they were pushed open from the outside.
Every pair of eyes in the hall pivoted away from Nathaniel and Vanessa, drawn by the sudden interruption.
Two men in impeccably tailored charcoal suits entered first, their sharp gazes sweeping across the three hundred guests with absolute authority.
Behind them walked an elderly gentleman leaning on an ebony cane with a silver eagle head.
Samuel Whitmore moved with deliberate, measured steps that commanded instant reverence across Chicago’s elite financial circles.
Beside him walked a team of four attorneys carrying heavy, locked leather briefcases bearing the gold-embossed seal of the Bennett Foundation.
Nathaniel frowned, setting his champagne flute down on a passing waiter’s tray.
"Mr. Whitmore?" Nathaniel muttered, his voice tightening with confusion as he stepped forward to greet the legendary trustee.
"We didn't expect you to attend our annual gala in person. Please, let me escort you to the VIP section."
Samuel didn't look at Nathaniel’s outstretched hand.
He didn't pause to acknowledge Margaret Ashford’s flattering smile or Vanessa’s admiring flutter of eyelashes.
Instead, the old man walked straight past the entire Ashford family, heading directly toward the quiet table near the entrance.
He stopped in front of me, took off his spectacles, and bowed his head with deep, unwavering respect.

"Good evening, Miss Evelyn," Samuel said, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the ballroom.
"Your grandfather’s legal contingency covenants have officially matured tonight."
