Chapter 5 - The Collapse On Madison Avenue

By midday Saturday, the cracks in Victor Grant’s facade had shattered into a full-scale public relations disaster.
The flagship Grant Parfums boutique on Madison Avenue had been surrounded by a mob of angry fashion influencers, beauty editors, and VIP clients who had paid upwards of five hundred dollars for exclusive pre-launch invitation boxes. Word had leaked through a disgruntled warehouse technician on TikTok that the first batch of Forever had been pulled from the shelves for ""chemical instability.""
Victor stood inside the VIP lounge on the second floor of the boutique, blinds drawn tight, clutching a half-empty glass of bourbon. His eyes were wild, dark purple bruises of exhaustion circling them.
The heavy mahogany door swung open, and Richard Hall marched in. At sixty-five, Hall was a legend in luxury acquisitions—tall, silver-haired, impeccably tailored, and possessing eyes that could cut through steel plating. Two stone-faced corporate lawyers followed behind him, carrying thick leather briefcases.
""Victor,"" Hall said, his tone devoid of warmth. ""Care to explain why my legal department just received a formal cease-and-desist letter from a boutique intellectual property firm in Hartford, Connecticut?""
Victor’s heart skipped a beat. ""What? What are you talking about, Richard? It's just a clerical error. A minor spat with a disgruntled former employee—""
""Don't lie to me,"" Hall snapped, cutting him off with a single flick of his wrist. ""The letter includes certified filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office dating back nine years. Every single botanical formulation used in the Grant Parfums catalog—including the core chemical breakdown of Forever—is registered under the personal trademark of Annabelle Vance. Not Grant. Vance. Her maiden name.""
Hall stepped closer, looming over Victor, who shrank back into the leather armchair.
""You sat across from me at the Crown on Thursday night,"" Hall whispered, his voice dangerously low, ""and swore on your father's grave that you held unencumbered, exclusive global rights to this entire product line. You presented me with an assignment contract bearing your wife’s signature.""
""That was her signature!"" Victor stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. ""She signed it! We have a joint marital estate, Richard! As CEO, I have the authority to assign—""
""My forensic document examiners examined that signature this morning,"" Hall said, tossing a photographic enlargement onto the low table between them. ""The pressure points are completely inconsistent. The ink deposition shows it was signed using a mechanical autopen programmed from an old tax return. You forged her name on a ninety-eight-million-dollar acquisition document, Victor. That isn't a civil dispute. That is grand larceny, wire fraud, and securities fraud.""
Victor’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the plush carpet, bourbon soaking into the fibers. ""Richard... please. Give me forty-eight hours. I know where she is. She’s at her grandmother’s old place in Connecticut. I’ll go up there myself. I’ll make her sign a legal release! She’s my wife! She always caves! She’s weak, Richard, she just needs to be handled—""
""Mr. Grant,"" Hall’s lead attorney chimed in, stepping forward and handing Victor a crisp, single-page legal document. ""As of eleven o'clock this morning, the Hall Capital acquisition of Grant Parfums is officially terminated for cause. Furthermore, we are invoking the liquidated damages clause of the preliminary letter of intent. You have seventy-two hours to return the twelve-million-dollar cash advance paid into your escrow account last month.""

""Twelve million?"" Victor gasped, choking on the words. ""I... I don't have twelve million in cash! I spent six million on the holiday ad buy! I bought the Fifth Avenue penthouse for Chloe! I paid for the nationwide billboard campaign!""
Richard Hall looked down at Victor with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust. ""Then I suggest you sell your sports car, Victor. Because if that wire isn't in my account by Tuesday at noon, I will have the United States Attorney’s office seize every asset you possess down to the cufflinks on your wrists.""
