Chapter 7 - The Phoenix of Chicago

One week later, the Chicago business landscape experienced an earthquake.
The headlines on every major financial newspaper and news site blared the same shocking story: MORETTI ENTERPRISES RESTRUCTURED UNDER BENNETT GLOBAL; FORMER CEO ARRESTED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT.
The public, who had long viewed Vincent Moretti as a self-made logistics prodigy, watched in fascination as his public reputation crumbled into dust. Sophia Reynolds’ mugshot was plastered all over social media, her high-society connections evaporating overnight as former friends scrambled to delete any association with her.
At the Bennett Tower, I hosted an international press conference in the grand auditorium. Over two hundred journalists, financial analysts, and corporate leaders packed the room. When I walked up to the podium, dressed in an impeccably tailored emerald-green suit, the room exploded with flashing cameras.
""For five years, I chose privacy over publicity,"" I began, my voice ringing out clear, steady, and full of unshakeable authority. ""I believed that supporting a partner from behind the scenes was the highest form of loyalty. But loyalty given to someone who does not respect you is merely self-destruction. Today, Moretti Enterprises is officially dissolved. Its infrastructure, patents, and assets have been absorbed directly into Bennett Global Logistics.""
A reporter from the Chicago Tribune raised his microphone. ""Miss Bennett, rumors are circulating that your ex-husband is facing up to fifteen years in federal prison. Do you intend to seek leniency or drop the charges against him?""
I looked directly into the camera lens, knowing Vincent would be watching the live broadcast from the communal television in the Cook County detention center.
""The Bennett family believes in accountability,"" I answered, without a trace of remorse or hesitation. ""Mr. Moretti made his choices in the rain on our fifth anniversary. He decided what had value and what was disposable. The law will take its natural course. I bear him no hatred, but I will show him no mercy.""
The room erupted into applause. For the first time in five long years, I felt the suffocating weight lift entirely from my chest. I wasn't just surviving; I was thriving. I had reclaimed my name, my dignity, and my kingdom.
After the conference ended, Alexander caught up with me in the private executive corridor. He handed me a glass of vintage champagne with a genuine, warm smile.
""That was magnificent, Claire,"" he said softly, his deep eyes crinkling at the corners. ""Your grandfather would have been profoundly proud of you today.""
""Thank you, Alexander,"" I replied, taking a sip of the crisp champagne. ""For standing by me. For never doubting that I could handle this.""
May you like
""I never doubted you for a second,"" he said, stepping slightly closer, his tone turning intimate. ""The only thing I ever questioned was why you chose him over the world in the first place.""
I smiled faintly, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering skyline. ""Sometimes you have to walk through the fire to realize you’re the one holding the torch.""
