Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Moretti Tower was suffocating with panic. Ten executive board members sat around the fifty-foot mahogany conference table, their tablets flashing red with emergency market alerts. When Vincent burst through the frosted glass double doors, his hair disheveled and his tie crooked, all eyes locked onto him in stony silence.

""What is the meaning of this circus?"" Vincent demanded, slamming his briefcase onto the table. ""Where is Alexander Hayes? If he thinks he can muscle Moretti Enterprises out of our own logistics patents, he has another thing coming. I built this company from the ground up!""

""You built nothing alone, Vincent,"" a smooth, commanding voice resonated from the head of the table.

The high-backed leather executive chair spun around slowly.

Vincent’s breath hitched in his throat. His knees buckled slightly, his mind refusing to process the image before him.

Sitting in the chairman’s seat was not an elderly Wall Street titan. It was me.

I was wearing a tailored charcoal Christian Dior power suit, my hair styled in sleek, razor-straight waves falling over my shoulders. Gone was the soft, apologetic housewife who tiptoed around his moods. Behind me stood Alexander Hayes, six-foot-two of aristocratic composure, holding an open leather binder containing the legal machinery that would dismantle Vincent’s life.

""Claire?"" Vincent laughed, a high, panicked sound devoid of humor. ""What kind of sick joke is this? Did you hire Hayes to pull a prank because I helped Sophia last night? Take off that suit and go home. You’re embarrassing yourself in front of my board.""

""Sit down, Mr. Moretti,"" Alexander Hayes said, his baritone slicing through the room like a scalpel. ""Before security removes you from the building you no longer control.""

""Are you insane?"" Vincent roared, lunging forward with his finger pointed at my face. ""She’s my wife! She doesn't own a single share in this company! She’s an unemployed design graduate I plucked from obscurity!""

""You really never read the fine print of our series-A funding contract, did you, Vincent?"" I spoke softly, but the sheer weight of my words made the room freeze. ""You were so desperate for twenty million dollars to save your father's failing warehouse business that you signed whatever the Bennett Trust put in front of you. You thought 'Bennett Holdings' was just a faceless corporate venture group.""

I opened a file folder in front of me and slid a certified birth certificate across the polished wood.

""My name is Claire Bennett Moretti. Granddaughter of Charles Bennett. Sole heir to the Bennett shipping legacy. I provided eighty-two percent of your initial liquidity. I wrote the automated routing algorithm you took credit for in Forbes. I let you play the visionary CEO because I loved you, and because I thought your success would bring you peace.""

Vincent stared down at the documents, his face draining of all color until he looked like a walking corpse. ""No... no, this is impossible. You... you cooked my dinners. You cleaned the house.""

""Because I loved a man who didn't exist,"" I answered coldly. ""And as of eight-thirty this morning, the board has accepted my formal motion. By virtue of your breach of fiduciary duty and the debt acceleration clause, you are hereby stripped of your title as Chief Executive Officer. Turn in your security badge, Vincent. You are trespassing.""
