Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Storm

Before the doctors could even protest Luca's suicidal medical demand, his encrypted satellite phone began buzzing violently against his hip. He pulled it from his pocket, glaring at the caller ID before switching the speaker on. The slick, arrogant voice of Julian Ferraro echoed through the pediatric room, laced with feigned concern.
""Luca? Thank God you picked up,"" Julian said, background chatter indicating he was surrounded by people. ""The board of directors called an emergency session ten minutes ago. Word leaked to Bloomberg that your wife was rushed to the hospital last night and that you’ve abandoned negotiations for the Pacific port deal. The stock is down eight percent in pre-market trading. We need you in the boardroom right now, or the committee is invoking the fiduciary emergency clause to vote me in as acting chief executive.""
Luca glanced at Leo, who was holding the silver medical donor card Luca had left on the bed. Then Luca looked at me, seeing the exhaustion, the fear, and the eighteen months of silent torment I had endured under his neglect. A profound transformation washed over him. The arrogance was gone, but the absolute power remained—now sharpened with a father's protective vengeance.
""Julian,"" Luca said smoothly, his tone terrifyingly calm. ""Keep the board in their seats. Don't let a single director leave the fifty-fourth floor. I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
""Luca, wait!"" I cried, grabbing his arm as he hung up the phone. ""You can't leave! The doctors said—""
""The doctors need ninety minutes to set up the specialized pediatric apheresis filters and prepare the reverse-isolation suite,"" Luca interrupted, turning to me. He reached out, his large hands cupping my face with an intensity that took my breath away. He leaned down and pressed a fierce, lingering kiss against my forehead, right at my hairline. ""I spent four years building an empire because I thought wealth was the only thing that could keep my family safe from the world. I was a fool, Nora. But I am not going to let a snake take the resources that will keep our son alive.""
He turned to his chief of security, Marco, who was waiting outside the door like a stone sentry. ""Marco. Lock down this pediatric floor. No one enters or leaves without my personal clearance. If a single unauthorized person steps off that elevator, put them in cuffs. Dr. Vance, begin the pre-medication protocol on me right now. Administer the granulocyte colony-stimulating factor injections. I will be back in this chair before the needles are ready.""
Twenty minutes later, the double oak doors of the Ferraro Holdings boardroom slammed open with the force of a thunderclap.
The twelve members of the board of directors leaped to their feet in shock. At the head of the seventy-foot mahogany table stood Julian Ferraro, a triumphant smirk freezing on his face as Luca strode into the room like an avenging deity. Luca’s shirt was unbuttoned, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the sterile white bandages already taped over the veins in his forearms where the pre-transplant medication had been injected.
""L-Luca,"" Julian stammered, frantically adjusting his silk tie. ""We... we were just trying to protect the company's market capitalization. Rumors were circulating that you had suffered a breakdown—""
Luca didn't waste a single breath. He walked straight to the head of the table, grabbed Julian by the lapels of his three-thousand-dollar suit, and slammed him against the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The glass groaned under the impact. Two directors gasped, while the security guards at the door took one look at Luca’s eyes and took a step backward, refusing to intervene.
""You put Warfarin in my Barolo,"" Luca hissed, his voice a low, murderous rasp that made Julian's eyes bulge with sheer terror.
""I... I don't know what you're talking about! It was a business toast!""
""My private investigator already pulled the security footage from the private lounge corridor,"" Luca lied coldly, bludgeoning Julian with sheer psychological intimidation. ""We have you on camera tampering with the decanter from your coat pocket. But you didn't just try to incapacitate me to steal a corporate vote, Julian. You poisoned the only matched donor for my four-year-old son, who is currently dying of aplastic anemia at St. Bridget's.""
A chorus of shocked whispers erupted from the board members. Several elderly directors looked horrified, their loyalties instantly shattering.
""I didn't know about a kid!"" Julian shrieked, his face turning purple as Luca's grip tightened around his windpipe. ""I swear to God, Luca! I just wanted you out of commission for forty-eight hours so I could execute the proxy vote! I didn't know!""
Luca leaned in until his lips brushed Julian's trembling ear. ""You tried to take my company. You almost took my son's life. Consider yourself fortunate that I need to keep my hands clean to hold him this afternoon.""
Luca hurled Julian across the polished floor like a sack of garbage. Julian landed hard against the conference table, knocking over water carafes and tablets. Luca turned to the frozen board members, his authority radiating like a blast furnace.

""Julian Ferraro is stripped of all executive authority, pending criminal indictment for attempted corporate sabotage and aggravated poisoning. The board will vote right now to transfer full proxy powers to Nora Quinn Ferraro, effective immediately.""
He didn't wait for a vote. He pulled the corporate seal from his pocket, slammed it onto the mahogany table, and turned on his heel. ""If anyone has an objection, you can explain it to the district attorney. My son is waiting for me.""
