Chapter 5 - The Confession of an Arrogant Man

In my penthouse, Alexander remained on his knees, his head hanging between his shoulders like a condemned prisoner waiting for the executioner's blade. The silence in the room was so thick you could hear the rain sliding down the exterior glass.

"Tell me what you meant, Emily," he pleaded, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. "What do you mean, you orchestrated this? You were just my wife! You never cared about business!"

I walked over to the mahogany bar, poured two fingers of neat bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler, and walked back over to stand directly above him. I didn't offer him a drop.

"Do you remember Helios Strategic Holdings, Alexander?" I asked smoothly.

He raised his head, his swollen eyes narrowing in sheer horror as the puzzle pieces began connecting in his fractured mind. "Helios? That's the predator fund that called the two-hundred-and-eighty-million-dollar note! They seized my company! How do you know that name?"

"I don't just know that name, Alexander," I whispered, smiling down at his crumbling face. "I am Helios. I bought your senior mezzanine notes eighteen months ago for pennies on the dollar through Vanguard Heritage."

Alexander opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His face turned a sickening shade of gray, his breathing hitching in his chest.

"You thought you were a business genius because you wore Brioni suits and smiled on CNBC," I continued, taking a measured sip of bourbon. "You forgot who wrote the original operating agreements for Whitmore Holdings seven years ago. You forgot that every time you made a foolish expansion, I was the one behind the curtain rebalancing the risk sheets so your company wouldn't go bankrupt in year three."

"You... you destroyed my company on purpose?" he stammered, his fingers clawing at the white marble floor.

"You destroyed your company, Alexander," I corrected sharply. "You were the one who signed loans you couldn't afford. You were the one who threw away a loyal partner to parade a trophy on social media. You were the one who thought you could treat a human being like garbage and walk away unscathed."

He began crying hysterically, pulling at his unkempt hair. "Emily, I was blind! I was seduced by her! She made me feel powerful! You were always so quiet, so sensible... I felt like I was living in your shadow!"

"You were living in my shadow," I said, letting the words strike him like physical blows. "Because without me, you were never anything more than an arrogant, mediocre salesman with an inflated ego."
