Chapter 8 - The Fight At Rockport Memorial

The drive through the blizzard-like nor'easter was a nightmare of fallen power lines, flooded roads, and blinding rain. Vincent drove with laser focus, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, navigating the heavy SUV through washouts while keeping one hand firmly anchored to Claire’s trembling fingers.

Every time a contraction ripped through her, Claire squeezed his hand with bruising force. Vincent didn't flinch. He absorbed her pain, whispering steady words of comfort.

"Hold on, my love. Just breathe with me. In through your nose, out through your mouth. We're three miles away. You're doing incredible. I’m right here. I’m not leaving you."

When they finally skidded into the emergency bay of Rockport Memorial Hospital, Vincent threw the car into park and carried Claire inside his arms, kicking open the double doors.

"Help her!" Vincent’s voice echoed through the emergency ward, carrying the absolute authority of a man who commanded empires, yet laced with the raw terror of a desperate father. "Premature labor, thirty-four weeks, inverted cervix, contractions ninety seconds apart!"

Nurses and an emergency obstetrician rushed forward with a gurney. Within seconds, Claire was wheeled into the trauma delivery suite. Machines were attached to her abdomen, their rhythmic beeps filling the sterile room.

"Her blood pressure is spiking! The fetal heart rate is decelerating—it's down to ninety!" the lead obstetrician shouted. "We need an emergency C-section right now! Prep OR three!"

Claire’s vision blurred with tears of terror. She was being prepped for surgery, cold antiseptic swabbed across her skin, the bright surgical lights blinding her. "Vincent..." she sobbed, reaching out blindly into the chaotic room. "Vincent, please..."

"I’m here!"

Vincent pushed through the scrub nurses, wearing a surgical gown and mask. He ignored the staff trying to herd him out. He grabbed Claire's hand, pressing his forehead against hers, his tears falling warm onto her cheek.

"I’m right here, Claire. Look into my eyes. Don't look at the monitors. Look at me."

"I’m scared," she wept, her voice small and childlike.

"I know, my darling. But you are the strongest person I have ever known in my life," Vincent choked out, his voice cracking with emotion. "For eight years, you carried me through the dark. Let me carry you through this. You and our baby are coming out of this room alive and healthy. I promise you."

The spinal anesthesia took effect, numbing the pain. Vincent never broke eye contact. He held her hand through the tugging, the sterile clanking of instruments, and the tense silence of the surgical team. He kissed her knuckles over and over, murmuring prayers he hadn't spoken since childhood.

Then, cutting through the hum of the monitors and the storm outside, a sharp, indignant cry filled the room.

The surgeon smiled over the drape. "It's a girl. A beautiful, feisty little girl. Breathing spontaneously."

Vincent broke down completely. He buried his face against Claire’s neck, weeping openly with great, shuddering sobs of pure relief and reverence. "It's a girl, Claire... we have a daughter."

The pediatric nurse bundled the tiny, four-pound infant into a warm blanket and brought her to Claire’s chest. The baby’s skin was pink, her eyes squinting against the light, a tiny tuft of dark hair curling on her forehead. As soon as she rested against Claire’s skin, her crying stopped, and her tiny hand reached out, brushing against Vincent’s thumb.

Vincent held his breath as those miniature fingers curled around his finger. In that sterile operating room, the billionaire realized that all his towers, his stock options, and his private jets were nothing more than worthless dust compared to the tiny heartbeat resting in his wife’s arms.
