Chapter 1 - The Secret In The Envelope

The air conditioning inside the prestigious law offices of Sterling & Vance hummed with a quiet, lethal efficiency. I sat across from Marcus Vance, watching his fountain pen glide across the thick parchment of the divorce petition. On the outside, I appeared entirely composed—a woman who had spent eight years mastering the art of staying invisible while keeping a titan on his feet. But beneath the edge of the polished mahogany desk, my fingers pressed gently against the lower curve of my abdomen. A secret pulse beat there, fragile and brand-new.

"Are you absolutely certain about these terms, Claire?" Marcus asked, peering at me over the gold rims of his glasses. "Under Illinois law, you are entitled to half of everything Vincent built during the last eight years. We are talking about tens of millions in liquid assets alone, not to mention equity in Moretti Enterprises, real estate portfolios across three continents, and personal trusts. You could walk away one of the wealthiest women in the Midwest."

"I don't want his money, Marcus," I replied, my voice steady, devoid of the tremor that usually betrayed my exhaustion. "If I take his fortune, Vincent will spend the rest of his life believing that my love had a price tag. He will tell the press, his board, and Sophia that I was just another calculated investment that liquidated at the right time. I want the clean break. Every single penny stays with him."

Marcus sighed and leaned back, his eyes narrowing with deep professional concern. "And what about the medical disclosure attached to Schedule B? You’re barely ten weeks along. The ultrasound report from Dr. Evans is dated three days ago. Once this file hits his desk, it will set off an explosion. A billionaire’s heir is not something men like Vincent Moretti surrender quietly."

"He doesn't even know," I murmured, recalling the tiny gray printout tucked inside my purse. I had planned to surprise him on our eighth anniversary dinner—the very dinner that went cold on our dining table while he stayed late at a downtown steakhouse, laughing over vintage wine with Sophia Reynolds. "He looked me in the eye last night and told me Sophia needed him because she depended on him. He thinks I am indestructible. He thinks I have no needs, no vulnerabilities, and no life outside of organizing his stomach pills and smoothing his tailored collars. Let him believe whatever fantasy he wants. All I demand is full, uncompromised, sole physical and legal custody. He surrendered his rights to me when he decided our marriage was a nuisance."

Marcus nodded slowly, stamping the red seal of urgency across the heavy manila envelope. "Then God help him when he answers the phone, because a man who thinks he owns the world is about to realize he doesn't even own his own front door."

Two hours later, that fateful call took place. Marcus dialed the private boardroom extension at Moretti Enterprises. I listened on speakerphone from the client armchair. Vincent answered with his typical brisk, impatient bark, the sound of papers rustling in the background.

"Vance, make this quick. I have an earnings call with Tokyo in ten minutes. I assumed Claire would drag her feet, but my assistant tells me your courier arrived. What are her terms? How many properties does she want in Lake Forest?"

"Mrs. Moretti has waived all claims to your liquid assets, real estate holdings, and corporate shares, Mr. Moretti," Marcus said smoothly.

A heavy, deadened pause hung over the line. Vincent let out a dry, incredulous chuckle. "Is this a negotiation tactic? She thinks playing the martyr will make me feel guilty? Tell her it won't work. Sophia and I are moving forward."

"There is no tactic, sir. She wants zero spousal support. She only requires one single stipulation in the decree: complete, sole custody of the child, with zero visitation privileges requested or required."

The background noise on Vincent's end stopped instantly. The rustle of papers vanished. Even the faint hum of his high-rise office disappeared into a void of sudden, suffocating silence.

"What did you just say?" Vincent’s voice dropped, stripped bare of all corporate authority.

"The custody clause for your unborn child, Mr. Moretti."

"What child?" Vincent whispered, the crack in his voice echoing through the speaker. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Mr. Moretti... your wife never told you?" Marcus asked, and before Vincent could scream another word into the receiver, Marcus severed the connection.
