Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gate

The heavy wooden front door of the lodge swung open, and I walked out onto the stone veranda alone. A cool mountain breeze rustled the leaves of the giant oaks surrounding the compound. Down the gravel courtyard, Grant marched forward, flanked by Arthur Vance and his towering private guards.
When Grant saw me standing tall, fully dressed, without a trace of the broken girl he had choked in the hospital bed, his stride faltered slightly. But his arrogance quickly reasserted itself. A smug, vicious smirk spread across his face.
""Allison, you look remarkably well for someone who kidnapped my daughter from her hospital room,"" Grant called out, adjusting the gold cufflinks at his wrists. ""Did you really think you could hide out here in the hills with your crazy uncle? Do you have any idea how much trouble you’re in?""
Arthur Vance stepped forward, holding aloft a manila folder with an official court seal. ""Mrs. Caldwell, I am serving you with an emergency ex-parte order of custody issued this morning by Judge Harrison. You have illegally removed an infant from medical care, and Mr. Caldwell has been granted sole temporary legal and physical custody. Furthermore, a warrant for custodial interference is currently being drafted by the commonwealth attorney.""
""Judge Harrison?"" I replied, my voice echoing off the stone bluffs with crystal clarity. ""You mean the same Judge Harrison whose daughter received a four-hundred-thousand-dollar 'educational grant' from Apex Holdings last Tuesday?""
Grant’s smirk vanished instantly. His posture stiffened, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. ""What did you just say?""
""Apex Holdings,"" I repeated, walking down the three stone steps into the courtyard. ""Account number 884-Bravo, routed through the Zurich-Cayman bridge. You've been busy, Grant. Taking twelve million out of your father’s primary operating accounts, shorting the stock of Caldwell Energy, and setting up an offshore escape hatch.""
Vance glanced nervously at Grant. ""Grant, what is she talking about?""
""Shut up, Vance!"" Grant hissed. He took two aggressive steps toward me, his hand balling into a fist. ""You stupid little bitch. You think you can blackmail me? You don't have access to those servers! You have nothing! Give me my daughter right now, or I swear to God, these men will tear this cabin apart and leave you bleeding in the mud!""
""Step forward another six inches, Grant,"" a voice boomed from the veranda.
Samuel stepped out into the light. He wasn't holding a weapon, but behind him, perched silently along the roofline and the tree perches, five men appeared, each armed with high-powered hunting rifles, laser optics glinting in the midday sun.
Grant’s private security guards immediately froze. These were retired cops and private bodyguards; they knew when they were hopelessly outmaneuvered and outgunned. The lead guard took a step back, raising his hands toward Samuel. ""We’re private security. We don't have a dog in this fight.""
""You cowards!"" Grant screamed, turning on his own men. ""I'm paying you ten grand a day! Take the baby!""
""They won't move, Grant,"" I said quietly, stepping within five feet of him. ""And neither will you. Because while you were driving up here, my Uncle's associates delivered an identical dossier to the Louisville branch of the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission. And more importantly... Marcus just hand-delivered a copy to your father.""
Grant went completely still, the color slowly draining from his cheeks. ""My... my father?""
May you like
""Richard Caldwell didn't build an empire by being stupid,"" I said, tilting my head. ""He’s a monster, yes. But he’s a monster who hates thieves. When he finds out his beloved only son has been stealing his empire out from under him while he was sleeping... who do you think he’ll destroy first? Me? Or you?""
Grant’s phone began to vibrate violently in his breast pocket. The caller ID on his smartwatch glowed bright red with a single name: DAD.
