Chapter 8 - The Hostile Takeover

Two months later, the Harbor Point ground-breaking ceremony made international headlines.
The financial press called it the most stunning corporate turnaround in New England history. Pryce-Rowan Holdings had secured a two-billion-dollar maritime logistics contract, revitalizing the historic port and creating thousands of union jobs.
At the ribbon-cutting event, Walter stood tall, his cane barely bearing any weight, his face glowing with pride as Maren delivered the keynote speech to hundreds of reporters, politicians, and business leaders.
""Boston was built by men and women who worked with their hands,"" Maren declared into the microphones, her voice clear, commanding, and filled with unwavering strength. ""Harbor Point does not belong to a single surname or an inherited dynasty. It belongs to the people who build it, protect it, and believe in its future.""
Applause thunderous enough to shake the pier erupted from the crowd.
Standing in the back of the media pen, watching from behind a crowd of camera operators, was a man in an oversized winter coat, his hood pulled low over his face.
Nolan watched Maren shine beneath the blinding stage lights. She was surrounded by the city's most powerful dignitaries, all treating her with the reverence she had earned through sheer intellect and grit.
Beside her, standing slightly behind her with absolute pride, was Silas Rowan. Silas leaned down, whispering something into Maren’s ear that made her throw her head back and laugh—a genuine, dazzling laugh that Nolan realized he had never once heard during their brief, cold marriage.
Nolan’s hands trembled in his coat pockets. He remembered the night he had walked back into her foyer with Brynn, convinced he was a conquering king coming home to claim his throne. He remembered mocking her, demanding she move out of her bedroom, telling her that she was only his wife on paper.
Now, he lived in a studio apartment in suburban Illinois, calculating gas money and checking the clearance racks for groceries. Brynn refused to speak to him except through lawyers regarding child support, disgusted that he had lost the Pryce fortune.
He had held gold in his hands and thrown it away for glitter.

A security guard tapped Nolan’s shoulder. ""Sir, you need to clear the press line. Private property.""
Nolan didn't argue. He turned his collar up against the biting wind, lowered his head, and vanished into the cold Boston fog, completely forgotten by the world he had once assumed he owned.
