Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Three weeks passed like a blur of legal depositions, press conferences, and quiet recoveries.
The media frenzy had been unprecedented. The image of the ""Billionaire Bride with the Black Eye"" had gone viral globally within hours of the interrupted wedding, sparking widespread national conversations about hidden domestic violence behind closed mansion doors and the unchecked greed of private equity heirs.
Nathan was denied bail twice, deemed an extreme flight risk due to his foreign shell accounts. He was being held in a federal detention center upstate, awaiting a formal trial where the charges against him carried a combined maximum sentence of sixty-five years. Without his mother's wealth or access to his frozen bank accounts, his high-priced corporate defense attorneys withdrew from his case, leaving him with a court-appointed public defender.
The bruise on my left eye had faded from dark purple to faint yellow, and finally, my skin was clear again. But the real healing wasn't happening in the mirror—it was happening in my grandfather's old executive office on the thirty-fourth floor of the family tower.
My father sat across from me at the solid oak conference table, reviewing the final recovery report prepared by Maya's forensic team.
""We managed to claw back ninety-two percent of the stolen assets,"" my father said, sliding the file toward me with a proud smile. ""Marcus Vance and the other private investors are going to recover almost everything they thought was lost. They've already called three times this morning asking if you would consider managing their private portfolios.""
I laughed softly, leaning back in the leather chair. ""I spent two years playing the part of a high-society hostess to fit into Nathan's world, Dad. I don't want to manage their investments. I want to build something that actually helps people who don't have millions to lose.""
Maya walked into the office carrying two iced coffees, dropping one onto my desk. ""Speaking of which, the state corporate division just approved the non-profit charter.""
She slid a sleek printed document in front of me. At the top, embossed in clean navy lettering, was the name: The Sterling Vanguard Foundation.
""What is the final mission statement?"" my father asked, adjusting his reading glasses.
""We provide emergency legal representation, forensic financial audits, and secure housing for victims of domestic abuse who are trapped by economic control,"" I answered, feeling a genuine warmth rise in my chest. ""Abusers like Nathan don't just use violence to control women—they use money. They hide assets, seize credit cards, force non-disclosure agreements, and make their victims feel like leaving means utter destitution. Our foundation ensures they have the resources, the forensic proof, and the legal firepower to walk away completely free.""
""And the seed funding?"" Maya asked with a knowing wink.
""Fifty million dollars from my grandfather's trust,"" I said firmly. ""Allocated directly from the very funds Nathan thought he was going to steal.""

My father stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the sparkling city skyline below. The afternoon sun bathed the room in brilliant, golden light.
""Your grandfather would be prouder of you today than on any day in your life, Emily,"" he said softly.
