Chapter 2 - Behind Locked Doors

The heavy double doors of the bridal suite clicked shut behind us, cutting off the furious uproar echoing from the cathedral sanctuary. Outside, voices were shouting—Nathan demanding that security block the exits, Victoria shrieking about public defamation, and guests murmuring in absolute disarray.
My mother was already inside the suite, pacing the Persian rug with tears streaming down her makeup. The moment she saw my face up close, she broke down, wrapping her arms around me and sobbing into my veil. ""Oh, Emily... why didn't you tell us? How long has this been happening?""
""It only happened once, Mom,"" I said gently, hugging her back while keeping my eyes fixed on the silver briefcase sitting on the velvet sofa. ""And once was all it took for him to destroy himself.""
My father locked the heavy brass bolt on the door. ""We don't have much time. Nathan’s private security guards are trying to corner the venue staff. They know something is wrong, but they don't know the extent of it yet.""
I walked over to the sofa where my maid of honor, Maya, sat with a high-end laptop opened on her knees. Maya wasn't just my best friend from college; she was a senior digital forensics expert who had helped me pull off the impossible over the last seventy-two hours.
""Did the decryption finish?"" I asked, setting the silver safe key beside the computer.
Maya looked up, a sharp grin cutting through her anxious expression. ""Every single ledger, Emily. That key opened the physical lockbox in his mansion, and the flash drive inside held the raw unencrypted accounting files for Whitmore Global Capital. It took my software six hours to bypass his custom firewalls, but the entire file tree is completely readable now.""
I sat beside her, lifting the laptop. My fingers moved over the keyboard with mechanical precision. Numbers, transactions, and hidden holding companies flooded the screen.
For months, Nathan had been wooing private investors with glossy brochures, claiming his firm managed over three billion dollars in venture capital with guaranteed twenty-percent annual yields. He projected the image of a young Wall Street prodigy, an untouchable golden boy from old money who turned everything he touched into gold.
The real ledger told a horrifyingly different story.
Nathan had lost nearly eight hundred million dollars over the past eighteen months through reckless, unhedged derivatives and illegal short positions. To keep the empire from imploding, he had built a textbook Ponzi scheme, taking deposits from new, trusting high-net-worth clients to pay off the interest owed to older institutional investors.
And the hole was widening by the minute.
Two weeks ago, his largest private funder had issued a formal margin call, demanding three hundred and fifty million dollars in cash by next Friday or they would file an involuntary bankruptcy petition against him.
That was where I came in.
My late grandfather had left me a blind trust containing five hundred million dollars in commercial real estate holdings and liquid blue-chip bonds. Under the terms of the trust, the assets remained completely under my sole custody until the day I married—at which point, according to an outdated family clause my grandfather drafted decades ago, the management of the fund could be transferred to a legally recognized spouse upon joint signature.
Nathan didn't love me. He didn't even care about me. He had targeted me from the very first charity gala we attended together. I was never his bride; I was his ultimate bailout package.
""Look at this entry,"" Maya pointed at a row of offshore bank accounts routed through the Cayman Islands and Zurich. ""Yesterday afternoon, right before he came to your apartment to force you to sign that power of attorney form, he already drafted the wire transfers. The minute you said 'I do' and signed that registry, your trust funds were scheduled to be moved overseas within forty-five minutes. You wouldn't have seen a single penny of your inheritance ever again.""
""And once the money was gone,"" I said quietly, touching the swollen skin beneath my eye, ""he would have filed for divorce, claimed I mismanaged the family estate, and left me ruined.""

My father knelt beside me, his eyes burning with quiet fury. ""The audiovisual system in the main hall is connected to the venue's master server, isn't it?""
""Yes,"" Maya said, tapping a red button on her screen. ""I have administrative access. All we need to do is hit broadcast.""
