Chapter 2 - The Sound of Truth

The cathedral speakers emitted a low hum, followed by the familiar clinking of crystal tumblers and the unmistakable, arrogant laughter of Adrian Blackwell. The sound was crystal clear, captured by the microscopic microphone I had spent four months hiding inside his platinum cufflinks.

""Did you take care of Arthur Jenkins?"" a rough, unfamiliar voice asked through the audio system.

There was a brief pause, then Adrian’s voice filled the cathedral, dripping with cold, nonchalant cruelty. ""The old fool wouldn't back down. He actually believed his little audit could stop the merger. He threatened to go to the federal prosecutors on Monday morning with the offshore ledger.""

""And the brakes?"" the rough voice pressed.

""Cut clean on the highway exit,"" Adrian answered without an ounce of hesitation, sipping his scotch on the tape. ""The state police will write it off as an unfortunate single-vehicle accident caused by heavy rain. A tragic loss for the family, of course. But it works out perfectly. With Arthur dead, Clara inherits his fifty-one percent voting shares in Jenkins Logistics. And once she wears my ring on her finger, those voting shares legally become mine. She’s too fragile, too terrified of her own shadow to ever ask questions. By the time she realizes the company is gone, it’ll be stripped and sold to the overseas syndicate.""

A collective, horrified shriek ripped through the pews. My mother, seated in the second row, buried her face in her trembling hands and began to sob uncontrollably. Beside her, city commissioners, prominent judges, and Adrian’s wealthiest investors turned to stare at the altar, their expressions curdling into absolute disgust. The prestigious wedding of the decade had just turned into a federal murder confession broadcast in four-channel surround sound.

Adrian lunged toward the sound technician’s booth near the choir loft, his tuxedo jacket flapping wild. ""Shut it off! Turn the damn power off right now or I will fire every single person in this building!"" he roared, his voice cracking with hysteria.

The technician, a college student I had paid handsomely three days ago to lock the system controls with an encrypted password, simply stood up, raised his hands, and walked away from the console. The recording continued to play, relentless and damning, echoing off the stained glass and the marble pillars.

""You're a monster, Adrian,"" the second voice on the tape chuckled nervously. ""What if she finds out?""

""She won't find out anything,"" Adrian’s recorded voice replied coldly. ""She lives in the house I bought. She eats the food I pay for. Every time she steps out of line, I remind her who owns her. A woman with broken ribs doesn't ask questions about accounting fraud. By the time our wedding vows are spoken, Arthur Jenkins’ death will be ancient history, and his daughter will belong to me.""

The audio cut out with a sharp click, leaving the sanctuary suffocating under the weight of his own words.

Vanessa Blackwell collapsed back onto the pew, her face as gray as ash. ""Adrian... tell them it's a fake,"" she whimpered, her hands fluttering helplessly against her lap. ""Tell them it's an AI voice clone. Tell them she fabricated it to extort us!""

""Yes! It’s fake!"" Adrian shouted, spinning around to face the crowd of elite socialites who were already pulling out their phones, snapping photos, and livestreaming the entire spectacle to social media. ""She made it up! Look at her! She’s an emotional wreck! She’s grieving her father and trying to destroy my reputation because I refused to sign her prenup demands!""

""Is this fake too, Adrian?""

I raised my right hand, holding up a sleek black USB drive.

""This drive contains the full forensic financial trail,"" I announced, looking past Adrian directly toward Detective Marcus Vance and the three uniformed officers who had quietly entered through the side doors. ""Every offshore shell company. The three wire transfers made to the mechanic who tampered with my father’s steering column on October twelfth. And the secret bank account in the Cayman Islands registered under the name of Vanessa Blackwell.""

Vanessa let out a choked gasp and fainted backward, knocking over an enormous brass urn filled with white lilies. The heavy flowers crashed onto the stone floor, scattering petals and murky water across the aisle.

Adrian stared at the USB drive in my hand like it was a loaded pistol. The polite, polished golden boy of high society was completely gone. In his place stood an exposed predator backed into a corner, stripped of his wealth, his masks, and his power.

""You took everything from me,"" I whispered, stepping right up to him so only he could hear. ""You took my father. You took my dignity. You thought you could beat me into silence and lock me in your mansion forever. But you forgot one thing, Adrian.""

May you like

He glared at me, his veins bulging violently along his temples. ""What?"" he hissed.

""My father taught me how to run a logistics firm,"" I smiled coldly, letting the ring slip off my finger and bounce off his polished leather shoes. ""I know how to track every single delivery. Especially the ones meant for prison.""
