Chapter 1 - The Scars Under the Silk

The lace dropped to the polished marble floor with a soft, heavy rustle, pooling like melting snow around my bare feet. A sharp, collective gasp echoed through the cavernous arches of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, cutting clean through the organ music that had only just drifted away. Four hundred and seventeen pairs of eyes widened in utter disbelief. Beneath the three-thousand-dollar French embroidery, I was not wearing the silk slip Vanessa Blackwell had picked out for me. I was wearing an open-back corset that left every single square inch of my skin exposed to the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows.

And my skin told a story nobody in high society wanted to read.

Faded violet bruises wrapped around my ribs like a pair of iron bands. Dark yellow shadows lingered near my shoulder blades. Across my left collarbone, a faint, jagged white line marked the exact spot where Adrian had shoved me into a marble fireplace eight months ago because I had forgotten to pick up his dry cleaning before a board meeting. The entire congregation went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop onto the stone floor. Women clutched their pearl necklaces. Prominent city councilmen shifted nervously in their pews, glancing sideways at their wives.

Adrian’s tanned, sculpted face went completely white. The confident smirk that had adorned magazine covers across the country evaporated instantly, replaced by a twitching jaw and eyes full of panicked fury. He lunged forward, his fingers snapping out like claws to grab my bare shoulder and yank me toward the vestry door.

""Put your dress back on right now, Clara,"" he snarled under his breath, his voice vibrating with lethal malice. ""You’ve completely lost your damn mind. Do you have any idea who is sitting out there? You are humiliating both of us. Cover yourself before I make you regret ever waking up this morning.""

I did not flinch. For three agonizing years, the slightest drop in his pitch had made my heart feel like it was stopping, making me instinctively lower my eyes and stammer an apology. But that fear was gone, burned away by months of meticulous planning and cold, calculated rage. I stepped backward, out of his reach, and looked directly into his furious blue eyes.

""No, Adrian,"" I spoke clearly, projecting my voice toward the vaulted ceiling. ""The only person who should feel humiliated today is you. Everyone here came to celebrate your perfection. They came to watch you claim another prize to display on your mantle. I think it’s only fair they finally see the true cost of your victory.""

From the front pew, Vanessa Blackwell stood up so violently that her champagne-colored designer hat tilted sideways. Her perfectly manicured hands gripped the wooden railing in front of her. ""Security!"" she shrieked, her voice shrill enough to make the elderly priest flinch. ""Guards! Get this hysterical girl out of the sanctuary immediately! She has completely lost her senses! Call an ambulance!""

Two private security guards in tailored black suits moved toward the altar steps from the side aisle. But before they could take three steps, a man in a charcoal suit stood up from the fifth row on the bride's side. It was Detective Marcus Vance from the state attorney’s special investigations bureau. He reached into his coat, pulled out a gold badge, and held it up with calm authority.

""Stay right where you are,"" Marcus commanded. ""Nobody touches the bride. Sit down, Mrs. Blackwell.""

Adrian looked between Marcus and me, his chest heaving under his bespoke tuxedo. ""Clara, whatever sick game you’re playing, it ends right now. You think a few bruises will ruin me? My lawyers will have the press calling you an unstable, drug-addled opportunist before the five o’clock news airs. You won’t get a single penny. You’ll leave this city in handcuffs.""

""I don't want your filthy money, Adrian,"" I said, reaching into the hidden slit of my underskirt where a small, wireless remote was taped to my inner thigh. I pressed the center button. ""I want you to pay for my father.""

Above the altar, the massive digital projection screen that had been installed to stream our vows to the satellite monitors flickered to life. The romantic montage of our courtship instantly vanished, replaced by a stark audio waveform pulsing against a pitch-black background. A static crackle hissed over the cathedral’s state-of-the-art surround sound speakers.

Adrian froze. Every drop of blood drained from his face as he realized what was coming.
