Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Within forty-eight hours, the story had dominated national news cycles. The headlines were sensational: 'GREENWICH WEDDING BUST: FBI ARRESTS PATRIARCH WHILE BILLIONAIRE SECRET DAUGHTER BUYS THE ESTATE.' Vanessa’s live-streamed video of me being pushed into the fountain—which she had proudly posted to her social media before the raid—had backfired catastrophically. Instead of turning me into a laughingstock, internet sleuths and investigative journalists quickly pieced together the entire timeline. The clip went viral with over fifty million views, accompanied by the revelation that the soaked woman in the green dress was the founder of Apex Cloud and Sovereign Alpha.

Vanessa’s social media accounts were utterly decimated. Sponsors dropped her within hours. Fashion brands demanded the return of promotional jewelry, and thousands of comments flooded her posts, mocking her arrogance and calling her out for years of cruel behavior.

By the end of the week, Richard’s bail hearing had taken place in a federal courthouse in lower Manhattan. I didn't attend, but Marcus Vance sat in the gallery and delivered the report to my office that afternoon. Richard was denied bail due to severe flight risk, after prosecutors revealed he had attempted to wire two million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands using a burner laptop while sitting in the back of the police cruiser.

Eleanor was forced to vacate the Greenwich mansion. With the bank freezing every joint account and the corporate credit cards cancelled, she had been reduced to moving into a cramped, one-bedroom rental apartment in Queens, funded solely by the pawning of her remaining engagement rings. The high-society friends she had spent thirty years cultivating vanished overnight. Not a single person from her garden club answered her phone calls. When she showed up uninvited at the country club, the security guards escorted her off the premises, citing revoked membership privileges.

On Friday afternoon, Marcus entered my private office on the sixty-fourth floor of the Sovereign Alpha tower in Manhattan.

""They're requesting a settlement conference, Emily,"" Marcus said, placing a manila folder on my desk. ""Richard's public defender and Eleanor's personal attorney. They are begging for an emergency living stipend and for you to drop the private civil lawsuits regarding the stolen Apex patents.""

I looked at the legal documents. Three years ago, a piece of paper like this would have caused my heart to pound with fear and guilt. But now, looking at the Carter Industries logo stamped on the page, I felt absolutely nothing. No anger. No hatred. Just complete, indifferent closure.

""What does our legal team recommend?"" I asked calmly.

""We recommend absolute enforcement,"" Marcus replied without hesitation. ""The civil damages for patent theft alone exceed forty-five million dollars. If we proceed to summary judgment, the court will seize every remaining trust, including the secondary assets Richard tried to hide under Vanessa's name. They will have nothing left but standard government pensions.""

""Do it,"" I said, closing the folder and handing it back. ""Let the law take its course. Not a dollar more, not a dollar less. They made their choices, Marcus. Now they get to live with the consequences.""

Marcus nodded respectfully, turned on his heel, and walked out of the office, ready to hammer the final nail into the Carter dynasty's coffin.
