Chapter 4 - The House Of Cards Collapses

The whispers among the guests turned into a frantic roar. Preston Sterling looked like he had been struck by lightning. His family, the illustrious Sterlings, had built their entire reputation on old money, grand estates, and centuries-old prestige. But behind closed doors, their real estate portfolio was drowning in unserviceable debt. The entire reason Preston was marrying Vanessa was because Richard Carter had promised a twenty-million-dollar dowry injection into the Sterling family trust immediately following the reception.

""What is he talking about, Preston?"" Vanessa screamed, grabbing her fiancé's tuxedo lapels with such force that a boutonnière flower snapped off and fell to the ground. ""He's lying, right? Tell me he's lying! This is your estate! My wedding is supposed to be featured in Vogue next month! You said we owned the Bellmont!""

Preston pulled away from her, his face pale and sweating. ""Vanessa, shut up! Just shut up for one second!"" He rounded on my father, pointing an accusatory finger. ""Richard! You promised the wire transfer cleared this morning! You told my father the twenty million was already in escrow! If that money had cleared, Deutsche Bank couldn't have liquidated the bridge loan!""

Richard looked like he was about to vomit. He staggered backward until his spine hit the edge of the fountain—the exact fountain he had shoved me into ten minutes earlier. He clutched his chest, breathing heavily. ""The... the wire was delayed... the banks were running a standard compliance check...""

""The wire wasn't delayed, Richard,"" I said, my voice cutting through their panic like a surgical blade. ""The wire was blocked. Because Carter Industries doesn't have twenty million dollars.""

The entire terrace gasped. Several of Richard's business associates immediately took their phones out, frantically typing messages to their brokers.

""That's a lie!"" Richard roared, desperately trying to save face before his peers. ""Carter Industries is valued at four hundred million! We are posting record profits! Don't you dare slander my life's work, Emily!""

""Your life's work is a hollow shell,"" I answered, signaling to Marcus.

Marcus stepped forward and opened a second folder, pulling out certified bank audits bearing the seal of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He began reading aloud, his voice projecting across the silent courtyard:

""Carter Industries has posted net operating losses for nine consecutive quarters. To mask the deficit, Mr. Richard Carter leveraged eighty percent of the corporate stock to secure short-term mezzanine financing from three high-yield European debt funds. Those loans matured at midnight last night. The collateral securing those loans was Carter Industries' corporate headquarters and all registered intellectual property.""

Marcus paused, looking up from the paper to meet Richard's terrified gaze.

""As of 4:15 PM today, Sovereign Alpha acquired one hundred percent of that debt. Mr. Carter, you no longer own Carter Industries. You do not own your office building in Manhattan. You do not own the patents. And you certainly do not have twenty million dollars to buy your daughter a seat in the Sterling family.""

The silence that followed was absolute. Vanessa stared at her father in horror, her mouth hanging open. ""Daddy... what did he just say? Where is the money? Where is my dowry?""

Richard couldn't speak. His knees buckled, and he collapsed heavily onto the marble bench beside the fountain, his eyes wide and vacant. The mighty titan of Greenwich society, the ruthless patriarch who had spent decades stomping on anyone who dared defy him, looked like a broken, pathetic old man who had finally run out of lies.
