Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs on Pennsylvania Avenue

The heavy doors of the West Wing swung open once more, but this time, there were no handshakes, no photo opportunities, and no donor champagne waiting on the other side. Arthur, Evelyn, and Trevor were escorted out by four federal marshals accompanied by uniformed Secret Service officers.

The morning rain had stopped, leaving Pennsylvania Avenue glistening beneath a sharp, unforgiving midday sun. The crowd of wealthy donors, corporate lobbyists, and political correspondents who had gathered for the Rose Garden defense summit were still milling about near the north gate.

When Arthur emerged, flanked by federal agents who firmly held his elbows, a collective murmur rippled through the gathering crowd of high society. The custom Italian suit that had looked so commanding two hours earlier was now rumpled, his silk tie askew, his silver hair disheveled by the humid wind.

"Step aside, please," the lead marshal announced, guiding Arthur toward a waiting black government transport vehicle idling near the curb.

Dozens of camera shutters clicked in rapid, frantic succession as photojournalists from major news networks swarmed the perimeter fence. Arthur instinctively raised his hands to shield his face, but the cold steel of the handcuffs around his wrists clicked audibly against his gold watch, flashing in the bright sunlight for the entire world to see.

"Arthur!" a prominent senator who had attended his lavish fundraising dinners called out from behind the VIP barrier, before quickly turning his back and walking away to avoid being captured in the same frame. The powerful friends he had spent fifty thousand dollars to impress scattered like dry leaves before an autumn gale.

Evelyn was weeping openly, stumbling along the pavement in her designer heels while Trevor covered his head with his tuxedo jacket like a common street offender. The boy who had shoved me with his shoulder two hours earlier was now trembling so violently his knees buckled as he was assisted into the back of the transport van.

I stood at the top of the marble steps beside General Vance, watching the spectacle with the quiet, detached stillness of a soldier who had seen far greater empires fall in far more dangerous corners of the earth. Arthur turned his head one last time before being pushed into the vehicle, catching my gaze through the crowd.

There was no arrogance left in his eyes, no cruel amusement, and no scotch-scented bravado. There was only the raw, agonizing realization that the daughter he had thrown away into the dirt had risen to become the very hand of justice that dismantled his hollow kingdom.

The van doors slammed shut with a heavy, hollow thud that echoed off the historic facade of the White House. The vehicle pulled away into the Washington traffic, its emergency lights flashing silently against the wet pavement, leaving behind nothing but the fading whispers of ruined pride.

"Come on, Colonel," General Vance said gently, resting a paternal hand on my shoulder. "The President is waiting in the Rose Garden. It's time to honor the people who actually protect this nation."
