Chapter 6 - Vows of Silence

Merritt walked down the long, mirrored aisle alone.
No father to give her away. No lavish retinue of bridesmaids. Just a solitary, graceful figure stepping across polished marble, her eyes locked straight onto Stanton Cole.
The crowd watched in breathless silence. To the onlookers, her slow, deliberate pace looked like the solemn reverence of a bride overwhelmed by romance. But watching her face on our 4K high-magnification monitors in the bunker, I saw something entirely different: the cold, calculating stride of a commander walking onto a battlefield.
Stanton took her hand as she reached the altar. His smile was dazzling, practically practically vibrating with greedy triumph. He reached for her fingers and leaned close to murmur something romantic for the cameras.
Merritt didn’t flinch, but she kept her fingers slightly stiff, barely permitting the contact.
The officiant, a high-profile society minister hired specifically for his photogenic demeanor, began the ceremony. He spoke of unity, shared vision, mutual elevation, and the grand journey ahead.
Every five minutes, Stanton glanced discreetly toward the rear tech booth, where his rogue technician Rick was giving nervous thumbs-up signals. Stanton was checking his timing. He had scripted this entire afternoon down to the second.
“Do you, Stanton Cole, take Merritt Lane to be your lawfully wedded wife?” the minister intoned.
Stanton turned toward the audience, projecting his deep, melodic broadcaster voice: “With all that I am, and with every resource at my command, I do.”
A soft murmur of appreciation rippled through the guests.
The minister turned to Merritt. “And do you, Merritt Lane, take Stanton Cole to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
The silence in the conservatory stretched.
One second. Three seconds. Five seconds.
A nervous cough echoed from the back row. Stanton’s smile flickered, a tiny bead of sweat suddenly forming at the edge of his hairline. He squeezed her hand subtly, signaling her to deliver her line.
Merritt looked up into his eyes, her expression entirely serene.
“Before I answer that question,” Merritt said, her voice clear, calm, and effortlessly carrying through the sensitive lavalier microphones, “there is a matter of business that my fiancé has insisted on sharing with this room.”
The crowd shifted, murmuring with intrigued amusement. Guests smiled at each other, assuming this was an adorable, pre-planned theatrical surprise.
Stanton’s eyes flared with sudden delight. He thought she was playing right into his script. He believed she had decided to announce the multi-million-dollar gift herself to save him the trouble.
“Ah, my generous bride,” Stanton chuckled warmly, stepping toward the center lectern and taking the master wireless microphone from its cradle. “Always thinking of our community before herself. Friends, distinguished guests, before we seal our union, today marks the birth of something even greater than our marriage. Today, we inaugurate the Stanton Creative Futures Initiative!”

He raised his arm dramatically toward the massive ninety-foot LED wall behind the altar.
“Cue the presentation!” Stanton commanded.
