Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

By two o'clock that afternoon, the news of Ethan Mercer’s catastrophic downfall had detonated across every major financial news network in the country. CNBC ran breaking tickers announcing the immediate cancellation of Mercer Dynamics' initial public offering, citing executive fraud and rapid debt default. Crain's Chicago Business, which Madison had boasted would feature their smiling faces on the cover, published an explosive front-page exposé detailing the CEO's reckless embezzlement of company funds for his mistress's luxury apartment.

Inside the corporate headquarters, chaotic panic reigned. Security guards hired directly by Vale Meridian stood by the elevators, overseeing the orderly evacuation of executive staff.

Ethan sat on the floor of his corner office, surrounded by cardboard boxes. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, his silk necktie pulled loose, his hair disheveled. The phone on his desk rang incessantly—calls from panicked creditors, equipment leasing companies demanding immediate repossession of four hundred delivery trucks, and angry minority investors threatening criminal prosecution.

The office door opened, and Madison walked in, wearing oversized dark sunglasses to hide her red, swollen eyes. She carried a single designer handbag.

""Madison,"" Ethan gasped, scrambling to his feet as if catching sight of a life raft. ""Thank God you're still here. Listen to me. I still have some private assets. If we liquidate the River North condo and sell the sports car, we can pull together nearly two million. We can leave Chicago. We can go to Miami or Austin, set up a boutique logistics consultancy...""

Madison pulled her arm away from his touch with sharp, venomous revulsion. ""Are you completely insane, Ethan? Did you not see the news? Two federal marshals just served me with an asset freeze notice in the lobby! The River North condo was purchased with embezzled corporate funds! The Vale legal team has already placed a lien on the deed, my bank accounts are locked, and I’ve been named as a co-defendant in a civil fraud lawsuit!""

""We can fight it!"" Ethan begged, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. ""We can hire a top defense team!""

""With what money?"" Madison shrieked, her voice shaking with rage and despair. ""You are completely broke, Ethan! Your stock is worthless paper! The board stripped your equity to cover the debt shortfall! You owe sixty-four million dollars, and your name is completely radioactive in this entire country! I gave up my career, my reputation, and my future for a man who turned out to be an empty, fraudulent suit!""

""You said you loved me!"" Ethan cried out, his voice cracking pathetically. ""You said I was a visionary!""

Madison laughed, a bitter, vicious sound that pierced Ethan’s soul far deeper than any legal document ever could. ""I loved the CEO of a billion-dollar tech firm, Ethan. I loved the private jets, the galas, and the penthouse. I didn't sign up to hold hands with a disgraced, bankrupt ex-husband who couldn't even realize his own wife was an heiress to one of the largest fortunes on earth.""

She turned on her heel and slammed the heavy oak door behind her, leaving Ethan completely alone in the hollow shell of his former kingdom.
