Chapter 6 - Collapse Of An Empire

Ethan staggered backward until his spine hit the panoramic window. The sprawling skyline of Chicago, which had felt like his personal playground thirty minutes ago, suddenly looked like an inescapable prison. Sixty-four million dollars. The company had barely eleven million in operational cash reserves; the rest was tied up in receivables, warehouse leases, and automated vehicle fleets.

""Arthur... please,"" Ethan pleaded, turning to Arthur Sterling and the other board directors with frantic, wild eyes. ""You know our projected cash flows! Call the regional banks! We can secure a bridge loan! We have the IPO coming!""

Arthur Sterling looked at Ethan with utter disgust, sliding his chair back as if Ethan were carrying an infectious disease. ""Are you out of your mind, Mercer? No financial institution in North America will extend a line of credit to an executive who has defaulted against Daniel Vale. Doing business with someone on Vale Meridian’s blacklist is financial suicide.""

Sterling stood up, buttoned his jacket, and turned toward Daniel and Claire with deep, deferential respect. ""Mr. Vale, Ms. Vale... as independent directors representing the preferred shareholders, the board immediately votes to convene an emergency session to remove Ethan Mercer as Chief Executive Officer for gross misconduct and breach of fiduciary trust.""

""Seconded,"" called out another board member without hesitation.

""You can't do this to me!"" Ethan roared, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. ""I founded this company! My name is on the building! Mercer Dynamics belongs to me!""

""Actually, Mr. Mercer,"" Harrison Vance interjected smoothly, producing another legal document, ""the commercial lease on this tower belongs to Meridian Property Group. Because your firm is now in severe technical default on its core debt covenants, your master lease has been terminated effective immediately. You have until noon to clear your personal belongings from the thirty-sixth floor.""

Madison Cole collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her trembling hands. The glamorous lifestyle, the corporate promotions, the penthouse, the invitations to high-society galas—the entire illusion she had spent months constructing by seducing her boss had disintegrated in less than twenty minutes.

She turned on Ethan like a cornered viper. ""You idiot! You told me she was a nobody! You told me she had no money, no connections, and no family! You told me you built everything yourself!""

""Shut up, Madison!"" Ethan screamed, clutching his head in utter panic. ""You were the one who pushed me to file the papers before the quarter ended! You said we needed her out of the way before the press conference!""

""Gentlemen,"" Daniel Vale’s deep voice cut through the petty shouting like a thunderclap. Both Ethan and Madison fell instantly silent, cowering under the elder billionaire's piercing gaze.

""Four years ago, young man,"" Daniel said, rising slowly to his feet, ""my daughter came to me and told me she had found a partner who valued honesty, dedication, and character above material wealth. I gave you every opportunity to prove her right. I stayed in the shadows. I watched you take her love, her youth, her time, and her quiet financial support, and I watched you turn it into arrogant, hollow vanity.""

May you like

Daniel stepped closer, standing inches from Ethan, radiating an aura of power that made the younger man shrink against the glass.

""You told my daughter yesterday afternoon that you were not planning to support her forever,"" Daniel whispered, his voice like cold iron. ""You were right about one thing, Ethan. You won't be supporting anyone. Because by the time the financial markets close this afternoon, you will not even have enough money left to buy yourself a decent lunch.""
