Chapter 3 - The Intercepted Trust

"What money, Vincent?" I asked, stepping out from behind Noah, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I worked forty-eight-hour shifts at the municipal hospital as a night clerk just to buy his high school textbooks."

Vincent’s eyes widened in horror.

"The Bennett Education Trust," he stammered, pulling a leather phone case from his coat and frantically typing on the screen.

"I set it up through First National Bank of Chicago forty-eight hours after the divorce decree was signed! My legal office has been wiring funds to that account every month for nearly two decades!"

He held the phone out toward me, his hands shaking so violently the screen blurred.

On the display was a recurring wire transfer authorization: Recipient: Bennett Trust Account #4092. Monthly amount: $10,000.

Noah leaned over and examined the bank routing code with that razor-sharp mathematical memory he had possessed since childhood.

"That routing code isn't for an educational trust, Mr. Moretti," Noah said coldly, pointing at the numbers.

"That's a commercial private holding subsidiary registered under the Delaware tax haven statutes."

Vincent turned his head slowly, looking at Sophia with an expression of dawning, terrifying clarity.

Sophia took two steps backward, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.

"Sophia," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal stillness.

"You managed my personal financial trusts when my private secretary took medical leave after the divorce."

"Vincent, no... it was an administrative oversight!" Sophia cried, holding her hands up in frantic defense.

"The lawyers told me that account was for offshore tax management! I didn't know!"

"You knew," I whispered, the sickening realization crashing down on me like a tidal wave.

Eighteen years of clipping coupons, eighteen years of wearing coats with frayed cuffs, eighteen years of watching my boy eat plain rice while I told him I wasn't hungry.

All while this woman intercepted over two million dollars meant for my son’s care.

"You stole my son's childhood, Sophia," I said, my voice steady, but so filled with quiet fury that the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees.

Ethan grabbed his mother’s arm, his face pale with horror. "Mom... is that true? Did you steal money meant for him?!"

May you like

"Shut up, Ethan!" Sophia screamed, her polished mask slipping off completely to reveal an ugly, cornered predator.

"Everything I did, I did to secure your future! He would have split your inheritance! He would have taken half of everything your father built!"
