Chapter 7 - Public Liquidation

By Wednesday morning, the business world was convulsing.

The press release issued by Sterling Global did not mention romantic betrayal, broken weddings, or personal vendettas. It was a masterpiece of institutional coldness:

Sterling Global Enterprises exercises covenant acceleration on Blackwood Dynamics bridge debt following forensic accounting audit revealing severe liquidity deficiencies. Chapter 11 restructuring proceedings initiated. Blackwood Dynamics board votes unanimously to terminate Alexander Blackwood for gross operational negligence.

The media sharks smelled blood in the water.

Tech blogs and financial news networks that had praised Alexander as the next wunderkind three months ago suddenly published scathing exposés detailing his extravagant spending, his inflated user metrics, and the infamous video of the Hawthorne Grand altar betrayal. On TikTok, the clip of Alexander declaring that Vanessa was the woman who belonged beside him had reached forty million views, paired with the subsequent news of his total financial ruin under the viral sound: Instant Karma.

Alexander sat in the living room of his rented luxury penthouse in River North, surrounded by eviction notices and packing boxes. His corporate credit cards had been declined at breakfast. His company-leased BMW had been repossessed from the parking garage at dawn. His cell phone was vibrating incessantly with calls from angry junior investors, process servers, and reporters.

The front door opened. Vanessa walked in, carrying a designer overnight bag.

Alexander looked up, his eyes bloodshot, a five-day stubble darkening his hollow cheeks. ""Vanessa... thank God. Did your father manage to secure an injunction against Sterling?""

Vanessa stopped five feet away from him, looking at him with utter disgust. ""Are you delusional, Alex? Crestview’s board forced my father to resign yesterday morning to avoid a federal audit from Sterling's legal task force. We're broke. My father's assets are frozen. I'm packing my things and moving to my aunt's house in Scottsdale.""

Alexander stared at her, stunned. ""You're... you're leaving me? After everything we did? I gave up Evelyn for you!""

Vanessa let out a cold, sharp laugh that echoed off the bare walls of the apartment. ""You gave up Evelyn because you're an arrogant idiot who couldn't tell the difference between real power and quiet confidence. You thought you were trading up, Alex. You traded the Queen of the board for an influencer who was drowning in her own father's bad debt.""

She hoisted her bag onto her shoulder and walked toward the door.

""Have fun at the bankruptcy hearing tomorrow, Alex. I hear the public gallery is going to be packed.""

The door slammed shut.

Alexander was left alone in the echoing apartment, the silence crushing down on him like lead. He looked at his reflection in the dark television screen. The confident, visionary founder was gone. In his place sat a desperate, broke thirty-three-year-old man who had voluntarily thrown away a diamond to pick up a shard of broken glass.

Meanwhile, seventy floors up in Sterling Tower, the atmosphere was entirely different.

I sat at my desk, reviewing the finalized transition files with Rachel Monroe, who had formally accepted the role of Chief Communications Officer for Sterling Global.

""The public narrative is completely solid, Ev,"" Rachel said, turning her laptop toward me. ""The tech community is praising Sterling’s intervention as a rescue mission that saved sixty local software jobs from Blackwood’s incompetence. Nobody is questioning your authority. In fact, our stock price in our publicly traded logistics ETF bumped up four percent this morning.""

I smiled faintly, looking down at my hands. For the first time in three weeks, my chest felt light. The suffocating weight of being Alexander’s quiet, self-sacrificing girlfriend was entirely gone.

""How do you feel?"" Rachel asked softly, leaning across the desk.

May you like

""I feel like myself again,"" I replied. ""The woman my grandfather spent twenty years training.""

""Good,"" Rachel smirked, picking up an invitation envelope with a gold seal. ""Because tomorrow evening is the annual Chicago Symphony Gala. Every high-society family, venture capitalist, and political figure in the state will be there. And it’s time for Evelyn Sterling Carter to attend her first official public gala as head of the family.""
