Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The air inside Boardroom Alpha instantly vanished.
Vanessa’s haughty expression shattered into a grotesque mask of shock and bewilderment. She looked from me to the board members, then back to me, her hand shaking as she dropped her stylus onto the carpet.
""What is this?"" Vanessa hissed, stepping forward with her chin thrust out, trying desperately to reclaim control. ""Alex, why is your ex-fiancée sitting in a Sterling board meeting? Who authorized this woman to be in this room? Security! This is a massive corporate breach!""
Not a single security officer moved. Marcus Vance let out a low, gravelly chuckle that sounded like dry leaves scraping over concrete.
""Miss Cole,"" Marcus said, removing his reading glasses, ""the person you are currently shrieking at owns sixty-two percent of the building you are standing in, ninety percent of the debt your father brokers, and one hundred percent of the decision regarding whether your company survives past lunchtime.""
Arthur Cole’s face flushed a deep, dangerous purple. He grabbed Vanessa’s forearm, his fingers digging into her sleeve. ""Shut your mouth, Vanessa,"" he whispered, a tremble in his usually boisterous voice. He stared at me, his eyes darting to the plaque set into the ebony desk.
Evelyn Sterling Carter. Chairwoman of the Board.
""Sterling..."" Arthur stammered, his arrogance evaporating like mist on hot pavement. ""Henry Sterling Carter... you’re his granddaughter? The sole heir?""
""I am,"" I said evenly. My gaze never left Alexander, who looked as though he were experiencing a massive cardiovascular event. He was gripping the wooden edges of the presentation podium so tightly his knuckles were white.
""Evelyn... no, this is impossible,"" Alexander mumbled, his voice cracking like a terrified teenager's. ""You lived on Webster Avenue. You drove that Volvo. You... you made chicken stew on Tuesdays. You don't know anything about enterprise software or corporate governance. You're an independent consultant!""
""I am a consultant who holds a master's in quantitative finance from Columbia and spent five years running turnaround acquisitions in London before coming back to care for my dying grandfather,"" I replied, my tone devoid of anger, which made it ten times more lethal. ""I lived on Webster Avenue because I wanted to build a real life with a man who loved me for who I was, not for what my portfolio could buy him.""
I stood up slowly. The entire board remained completely rigid.
""For three years, I gave you my advice, my patience, and my heart. When your firm was twenty-four hours from missing payroll two winters ago, who restructured your mezzanine repayment terms? I did. When you were terrified that your supply chain partners were stealing your architecture, who wrote the IP firewalls? I did. And you told me I was 'dramatic.' You told me I would never fit into your world.""
I stepped around the desk, walking with slow, deliberate steps until I stood five feet from the podium.
""You were right, Alexander. I don't fit into your world. Your world is an eight-million-dollar puddle of debt, posturing, and shallow vanity. You are standing in mine.""
Alexander swayed on his feet. ""Ev... Evelyn, listen to me. The wedding... it was a misunderstanding. It was the pressure. The investors were demanding—""
""Do not insult my intelligence by lying in front of my board,"" I cut him off, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the cold authority of four generations of industry titans. ""I read your tablet two weeks before the ceremony. I saw your messages to Vanessa. You wanted a public execution of our relationship because you thought it would prove your ruthlessness to the market.""
Vanessa stepped up, her voice desperate, losing all her polished composure. ""Miss Carter... please. This is business. Blackwood Dynamics is a viable platform. Crestview has heavily invested—""
""Crestview holds nothing,"" I interrupted, turning my cold gaze on her father. ""Arthur, tell your daughter who owns the eighty-million-dollar bridge loan Blackwood Dynamics took out to stay alive.""
Arthur Cole swallowed hard, beads of sweat breaking out along his receding hairline. He couldn't even meet my eyes. ""Sterling Global... Apex Horizon purchased the debt paper three weeks ago.""

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked at Alexander as if he had suddenly turned into an alien. ""You... you told me Crestview had total control! You told me we were safe!""
""He isn't safe,"" I said softly. ""Nobody in this room is safe from the consequences of their own choices.""
